The player can take photos by using their Rotom Phone and becomes available early in the games.
Photos can be taken using the front or back cameras, using the L and R buttons to rotate the camera. This function can be used to change thew player's profile picture or Trainer icon. Several filters can also be enabled for dynamic shots. The player can make numerous faces and poses while taking a selfie. Other players can also join appear in photos, in which they can make their own preset gestures that can be done at any time in the overworld. Many of these gestures can be unlocked through certain tasks and side quests. Like in Legends: Arceus, photos are saved to the system's memory or SD Card.
Both updates that came with along side the release expansions of the The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero DLC also included several updated to the Rotom Phone and picture taking including the Roto-Stick which allowed players to take selfies further away from the camera. The update that came alongside the The Teal Mask not only included the Roto-Stick, but also three different tracks that can be played through the Rotom Phone's radio, allowing the player to take photos with certain NPCs and changing their expression to the corresponding music tracks. The Teal Mask expansion itself also included more poses and expressions that the player can unlock by accomplishing certain tasks.
The Indigo Disk had its own set of pose and facial expressions that were rewards from certain side quests, many of which are references to previous characters or games, such as Leon's Chariozard pose. By donating BP to the Photography Club in the League Club Room, the player will unlock certain frames and special effects that can be applied to either the photo or the camera for more dynamic and appropriate shots.
