The use of flags as language indicators provides poor user experience for a variety of reasons: languages are not restricted to a single country, countries are not restricted to a single language, and flags often have political significance which can cause unnecessary strife (_particularly_ when language is involved). A few examples can be found at [https://www.flagsarenotlanguages.com/blog/why-flags-do-not-represent-language/]. It also isn't clear that the use of flags provides any significant benefit of clarity, particularly for something like English where the flag of England—not a national flag, and less likely to be recognized—is used on Bulbapedia. I believe it would be an overall improvement to remove them from this template. —[[User:Leftmostcat|Leftmostcat]] ([[User talk:Leftmostcat|talk]]) 15:54, 1 August 2023 (UTC)

:It is worth mentioning that in the Pokémon games themselves, they use 3-letter abbreviations instead of flags as symbols for languages (eg. "ENG" for English, "JPN" for Japanese, "ESP" for Spanish, etc). Also, here in BP we sometimes don't even put flags on lang tables at all (eg. for character and town names).
:The suggestion is def interesting, although i do have a slight concern in that we document Pokémon info from all sorts of languages, not just the 8 used in the Pokémon games, so we're gonna need a lot of 3-letter abbreviations. There is {{wp|ISO 3166-1 alpha-3|an ISO standard}} for this, though, so maybe we can use this if we decide to switch to the 3-letter abbr's.
