Elio is an 11-year-old boy who recently moved from the Kanto region to Melemele Island in the Alola region. He moved to the region along with his Mom. Elio exclusively appears as a player character.

On Melemele Island
Elio begins his adventure when Professor Kukui asks to see him. After grabbing his bag and hat, he walks with the professor to Iki Town to receive his starter Pokémon from the island's kahuna, Hala. Mistaking the young girl for the kahuna, he runs into Lillie, who's Cosmog, Nebby, has escaped her bag and gets attacked by wild Spearow on an unsteady plank bridge. He quickly protects the Pokémon despite not having one of his own. After the bridge collapses, the island's guardian deity, Tapu Koko, saves the two from falling. Elio quickly befriends Lilllie and Nebby who then proceed to walk back to Iki Town for Elio to choose his first Pokémon. After doing so, he gives the Sparkling Stone to Hala, receives a Pokédex from the professor, and meets Hau, a rival who he befriends and has battles with often. The following day, Professor Kukui teaches Selen ehow to become a proper Trainer. She battles Hau once again and is given a Z-Ring by Kahuna Hala, officially starting her island challenge. After upgrading her Pokédex to the Rotom Pokédex, she sets out to the Alola's Trainers' School with Lillie. Proceeding to Hau'oli City with his new friends, Elio takes a group picture with Hau and Lillie using Rotom Dex. While on his island challenge through Melemele, he runs into the troublesome Team Skull, a group of hooligans harassing people and interfering with the island life. After finding Nebby who is lost in Melemele Meadow, Elio defeats Hala in his first grand trial and travels with Lillie, Hau and Kukui to the island of Akala to proceed his island challenge.

On Akala Island and Aether Paradise
On Akala Island, Elio is asked by Lillie, who is currently staying at Heahea City, to help her finding more about and protecting Nebby. On his island challenge, Elio runs into another rival, Team Skull's Gladion, who seems to be berating Hau for how he battles and his strength. Elio defeats the Team Skull enforcer, and goes on with his island challenge, accomplishing Lana, Kiawe and Mallow's trials. Along the way, he meets with Hapu, Colress, and The Masked Royal who all view Pokémon in different ways. Elio makes his way back down to Heahea's Dimensional Research Lab ran by Kukui's wife, Professor Burnet. Going through Diglett's Tunnel, Elio meets with Kahuna Olivia who agrees to do a grand trial with Elio. During their travels on Route 9, they meet with Faba of the Aether Foundation. Faba brings both Hau and ELio on a tour of Aether Paradise. At Aether Paradise, he meets the company's president, Lusamine and her goals of protecting Pokémon. Elio protects Lusamine from an Nihilego Ultra Beast reaching the artificial through an Ultra Wormhole. They are sent to Ula'ula Island and regroup with Professor Kukui and Lillie.

On Ula'ula Island
Continuing his island challenge, Lillie requests that help with research at the Malie Library. There, Elio meets with Hapu again and is given access to a book in the library by Acerola called The Light of Alola and learns about Alola's Legendary Pokémon. Traveling to Mount Hokulani, he learns from Professor Kukui about the now developing Pokémon League. Returning to Malie Garden, Elio runs into Guzma, Team Skull's Boss who thinks the Pokémon League and island challenge is unnecessary. Noticing his Z-Ring, Guzma picks a fight with Elio and shows him his strength. Elio regroups with Hau and travels down to Tapu Village to stay at Aether House. Along the way, they run into Gladion once more, who aggressively tells the two to protect Cosmog at all costs if they know anything about it. Elio travels to Po Town to rescue a Yungoos living at the orphanage. This turns out to be a scheme conducted by Team Skull's Admin Plumeria, who Elio has fought before, kidnapping Lillie and Nebby and brings them to Aether Paradise. Overhearing the conversation, Gladion forces Elio and Hau to come with him to the facility with certain that Lillie is there.

On her return to Aether Paradise
The now hostile Aether Foundation attempts to prevent the group from finding out information on Cosmog and Lillie. Elio goes to Aether's Secret Lab B, and learns more about Cosmog, it's origins, and professor Mohn. Regrouping with Hau and Gladion, Elio takes down Team Skull once more before reaching the Mansion where Lillie and Lusamine are kept. Elio finds out that the President of the Aether Foundation, is in fact the mother of both Lillie and Gladion; and has an obsession with Ultra Beasts. Lusamine had ended up kidnapping Nebby and using its powers to unleash hordes of Ultra Beasts across the Alola region, ending with both her and Guzma traveling to Ultra Space after a battle. This process has caused Nebby to evolve into Cosmoem (although none of them seem to be aware of this). The group splits off and Gladion gives Lillie the Moon Flute/Sun Flute.

During his island challenge, Elio encounters Team Skull, a group of hooligans harassing people and interfering with the island life; the Aether Foundation, an organization dedicated to protecting Pokémon; and Gladion, a mysterious boy who works as an enforcer for Team Skull. He also learns about Ultra Beasts, mysterious creatures that exist in a dimension called Ultra Space; and about Professor Kukui's dream of building an Alolan Pokémon League.
Poni Island
Elio and Lillie travel to Poni Island's Seafolk Village to search for a way to find Lusamine and save Nebby. The two meet up Hapu for the third time, and brings them to the Ruins of Hope, watching her become the kahuna of Poni Island. Hapu tells them of a second flute, and a ritual to be performed on top of Poni's Altar. After a small journey through Exeggutor Island, Elio finishes his last grand trial with Hapu, with the group of three proceeding through Vast Poni Canyon. At the end of the canyon, Elio completes the last of is trials, and is met with the Altar of the Sunne/Altar of the Moone where he and Lillie perform a ritual that causes Nebby to evolve into the Legendary Pokémon: Solgaleo/Lunala, who takes them to Ultra Space. Elio confronts and defeats Lusamine, who berates him for helping and befriending Lillie, and they're brought back to Alola by Nebby.

Ending
Elio eventually finds out that Lusamine, the President of the Aether Foundation, is the mother of both Lillie and Gladion and obsessed with Ultra Beasts. She ends up kidnapping Nebby and using its powers to unleash hordes of Ultra Beasts across the Alola region and travel to Ultra Space. Elio and Lillie travel to Poni Island to search for a way to find her. After Elio has completed all of his island challenge trials, he and Lillie perform a ritual that causes Nebby to evolve into the Legendary Pokémon Solgaleo or Lunala, who takes them to Ultra Space. Elio confronts and defeats Lusamine, and they're brought back to Alola by Nebby.
After caught Nebby, Elio climbs to the summit of Mount Lanakila and takes on Alola's newly established Pokémon League and Elite Four. After defeating them, he battles and defeats the League's founder, Professor Kukui, and is declared the first-ever Champion of Alola. During the subsequent celebration in Iki Town, Lillie takes Elio to the Ruins of Conflict, where the newly crowned Champion faces Tapu Koko in battle. The following day, Lillie leaves Alola to go to Kanto and Elio says goodbye.

Elio appears in the credits on a photo on the end screen, a photo that he, Hau and Lillie all took at Hau'oli City from the start of their journey. This photo is a part of an animated sequence. This sequence has a package sitting next to Lillie's pink rucksack. The contents of this package include the photo (among many others), Elio's trial amulet, and a letter to Lillie.

Elio is soon contacted by Looker and Anabel of the International Police, who request her help in catching the Ultra Beasts unleashed into Alola due to Lusamine's actions. Elio agrees to this and successfully catches all the Ultra Beasts roaming around Alola.

During his travels, Elio encounters a group of strange pale people known as the Ultra Recon Squad, who are later revealed to be working with the Aether Foundation. When Lillie and Nebby are kidnapped, Elio follows them and finds out that Lillie's mother Lusamine is seeking to travel to Ultra Recon Squad's home world to stop a Pokémon known as Necrozma before it can threaten Alola. She successfully uses Nebby's powers to travel to this alternate world, leaving Lillie and Elio to figure out how to follow her. They travel to Poni Island and perform a ritual that causes Nebby to evolve into the Legendary Pokémon Solgaleo or Lunala. However, before Elio and Lillie can go after Lusamine, she's suddenly thrown out of an Ultra Wormhole before them, followed by Necrozma. Necrozma proceeds to battle and absorb Nebby, before traveling back to Ultra Space. With the Ultra Recon Squad's help, Elio travels to their home world of Ultra Megalopolis, where he defeats Necrozma once again and saves Nebby.
Background and pre-game
Like in the original Sun and Moon games, Elio is an 11-year-old boy who moved from Kanto to Alola with his mother. Sometime before his move to Alola, he has met Lt. Surge, the Gym Leader of Vermilion City, and got a signed Autograph from him. He put this autograph on a pedestal in his room.

After completing his last island challenge trial, Elio climbs Mount Lanakila to reach the newly established Pokémon League at its summit, re-encountering Necrozma along the way. After Elio has defeated the brand-new Alola Elite Four, Professor Kukui arrives and presents Hau as his final challenge before he can claim the championship. Elio successfully defeats Hau one last time, making him the first Champion of Alola.
