Shaymin is based on either a {{wp|hedgehog}} or {{wp|porcupine}}, more likely the former. Its porcelain-white skin and its furry coat of grass also resembles a {{wp|chia pet}}.

Its name may come from the word {{wp|shame}}, as it is a very shy and elusive Pokémon. It may also be derived from {{wp|shaman}}. The English name also is a slight alteration of its Japanese name. Its katakana name contains ''mi'', which means "seed" in Japanese.
