Banette's name is a combination of ''bane'' and ''{{wp|marionette}}'', or perhaps 'banter', referring to the way it skips about. Its Japanese name may be a corruption of ''{{wp|Jupiter}}'' or a reference to ''Geppetto'', a woodcarver who built a puppet that came to life in the story of {{wp|Pinocchio}}. It may also come from 呪縛 ''jubaku'', curse or spell, and ''puppet''.
