Venonat appears to be based on {{wp|mite}}s or {{wp|tick}}s due to its round body and {{m|Leech Life|piercing}} mouthparts. It is also similar to a {{wp|flea}} due to its large hind legs that it uses to hop around. It may also draw inspiration from {{wp|caterpillar#Human health|venomous caterpillar}}s such as the {{wp|flannel moth|puss caterpillar}} due to its numerous long, stiff {{wp|Urticating hair|hairs}} and the fact that it evolves into a {{p|Venomoth|moth}}. Its large {{wp|compound eye}}s function like {{wp|radar}} and resemble {{wp|parabolic reflector}}s.

Venonat may be combination of ''{{wp|venom}}'' and ''{{wp|gnat}}''.

Kongpang may be a combination of こんちゅう ''konchū'' (insect) and ''pang'' (similar to ''ping'', a sharp sound produced by sonar).
