:Also, while the first criteria I've provided certainly seems more like it describes a Travelling companion, all of the provided examples battle with the player at least once, at some point <i>do</i> want to be better than the player at <i>something</i> and are recurring enough to make them signifigant on the level of a rival, even if most of them grow <i>out</i> of being the player's rival [Brendan/May & Bianca go on to become assistants to professors, while Shauna, Tierno, and Trevor sorta fade from being a rival to follow their own goals separate from the player] making them the opposite of Gladion's case.
