So, it's very clear that Mudsdale is based on a Clydesdale, but a friend of mine brought up an interesting additional possibility. It could also be inspired by a Clydesdale ''mule''. They have huge ears that look extremely similar to Mudsdale's, and at least some of them (Google Images doesn't seem to be very good about capturing this fact) have the distinctive fuzzy feet that Clydesdales have. Thus, Mudsdale could be inspired both by a draft horse like a Clydesdale and a draft mule bred from a Clydesdale. Plus, that would make a slightly less dramatic shift from Mudbray, who is a donkey.
