The {{player}} wakes up in a forest clearing as a human transformed into a {{OBP|Pokémon|species}}. As the player wakes up, they are greeted by the partner, who tells them that they look like a Pokémon. A mother {{p|Butterfree}} approaches the pair and frantically tells them that a fissure opened in the ground and her son, a {{mdc|Caterpie|1}}, fell into a cavern. The player and partner agree to help by rescuing Caterpie in [[Tiny Woods]]. When they reach the deepest part of Tiny Woods, they rescue Caterpie and unite him with his mother, who gives them a reward. The player learns that [[Pokémon world (Mystery Dungeon)|this world]] has been afflicted by a recent bout of natural disasters, one of which created the fissure that Caterpie fell into. Afterward, the partner takes the player to the [[Team Base]], where the two agree to form a [[Team|rescue team]].
