POKÉMON Detective Pikachu: Difference between revisions

Some time later, 21-year-old insurance salesman [[Tim Goodman]] is spending time with his friend {{OBP|Jack|Detective Pikachu}} in their home of Leaventown. Jack brings Tim to a field in search of wild Pokémon despite Tim's protestations that he does not need a Pokémon partner. Tim, who gave up being a {{pkmn|Trainer}} after the death of his mother and alienation from his father, eventually gives in and attempts to capture a wild {{p|Cubone}}. His attempt fails and the Cubone chases Tim and Jack away. Back in Leaventown, Tim receives a phone call informing him that his father Harry has died as a result of the car crash.

Tim travels to [[Ryme City]] to place Harry's affairs in order. En route aboard a train, he and the other passengers are shown a public service video explaining the city's history: billionaire tycoon [[Howard Clifford]], who developed a degenerative disease, became fascinated with Pokémon as he traveled the world in search of a cure for his condition. Howard eventually became convinced that if humanity could live as one side-by-side with Pokémon, they too could [[Evolution|evolve]] into the best versions of themselves, much as Pokémon do. To fulfill his vision, Howard used his fortune to found Ryme City as a utopia where Pokémon live with humans free of [[Poké Ball]]s, with [[Pokémon battle|battles]] outlawed. Upon arrival in Ryme City, Tim heads for a police station and notices a {{p|Psyduck}} watching him. He meets with [[Lieutenant Hide Yoshida]], an old colleague of Harry's, who consoles him over his father's death. Yoshida urges Tim to find a partner like his {{p|Snubbull}} so he no longer has to be alone, but Tim is unreceptive to this advice.

Continuing their investigation, the duo meets with Lucy at Hi-Hat Café. She shows them documents regarding the mysterious destruction of the PCL, which has been designated off-limits as a hazardous site following the explosion. The unexplained circumstances regarding the lab's destruction arouse the group's suspicion, as does the history of chief scientist [[Dr. Ann Laurent]], who was a Pokémon neurologist that had her research grant revoked for experimenting with mind-controlling Pokémon prior to working there. They head to the ruins of the PCL, unaware that Roger is following them with a team of his henchmen.

At the lab, the group discovers that the {{p|Greninja}} and {{p|Torterra}} that were experimented on are still being stored there. Pikachu finds a functioning computer in the main laboratory, which he and Tim use to access holographic video records of Laurent's activity. They learn that Laurent created a neural link headband for human use and had been extracting Mewtwo's DNA to create the R serum, which provokes an incoherent rage in its user due to a [[Berserk Gene|unique property]] of Mewtwo's genetic makeup. By going back further in the archive, they discover that Harry had been working for Laurent's benefactors, specifically tasked to help locate Mewtwo so it could be captured. Roger, who has been monitoring them on his laptop using the lab's security cameras, remotely releases the genetically modified Greninja to attack the group. They are pursued relentlessly until Psyduck uses its full power to blow the Greninja away. However, they soon find themselves trapped amidst a group of [[Giant Pokémon|mountain-sized]] Torterra. They barely manage to survive, but Pikachu is gravely wounded in their escape. Tim desperately remembers Pikachu's earlier advice about how Pokémon understand humans and is able to convince a {{p|Bulbasaur}} to help. The Bulbasaur, along with several more of its species and a number of {{p|Morelull}}, bring Tim to a valley where they encounter Mewtwo. Mewtwo heals Pikachu's injuries and shows them both a vision of Pikachu sabotaging the lab's security, enabling Mewtwo's escape. However, before it can reveal the truth of Harry's disappearance and its intentions, Roger captures it with machines and takes it away in his truck. Tim and Pikachu reunite with Lucy, but Pikachu abandons Tim, believing that he sold Harry out so Mewtwo could get revenge for its capture. He later comes across the bridge where the accident occurred and discovers proof that it was the Greninja that caused the crash, not Mewtwo. This leads him to realize Howard has been misleading Tim all along.

Tim and Lucy rush back to Ryme City, fearing that Roger plans to attack the Pokémon parade to get revenge for his father's neglect. Lucy disguises herself as a reporter and attempts to talk to the Ryme City mayor, but Roger appears and she flees. Tim, meanwhile, goes to Howard's office, only to discover Howard wearing the neural link headband Laurent created. Realizing too late that Howard, not Roger, was the mastermind of the plot, Tim is powerless to stop Howard from merging his mind into the captured Mewtwo's body. Howard tells Tim that he devised the plot as a cure not only for himself but for all humanity. Harry had begun investigating the case and traced R to the Roundhouse and then to Laurent, forcing Howard to arrange for him to be killed. Howard throws Tim aside with his newfound telekinetic abilities, flies off into the city and ruptures the parade balloons, unleashing the R within on the civilians and Pokémon below. Countless people, among them Lucy and Yoshida, are fused into their Pokémon by Howard as the final stage of his plan. Pikachu arrives and summons his powers to engage Howard in battle. Meanwhile, Tim comes to and realizes he can stop Howard by removing the neural link, but before he can do so he discovers Roger bound and gagged inside the office closet. The "Roger" who captured Mewtwo arrives and [[Transform (move)|shapeshifts]] into Ms. Norman, who removes her sunglasses to reveal that she is, in fact, a {{p|Ditto}}. She shapeshifts into a {{p|Loudred}} and attacks Tim with {{m|Hyper Voice}} before assuming the form of Lucy and fighting Tim with her bare hands. She then becomes a {{p|Machamp}} and punches Tim until he ends up hanging out the office window, and then becomes a Cubone to try and make him lose his grip. He nearly falls but is rescued when Roger hits Ms. Norman out the window with a pole and helps him up. She soon returns in the guise of a {{p|Braviary}}, however, and takes the form of a {{p|Bouffalant}} to headbutt Roger, knocking him out. Ms. Norman next transforms into a Charizard and tries to kill Tim, but he manages to spray her with a hose connected to a tank of R, causing her to uncontrollably shapeshift before melting into unconsciousness in her true Ditto form.
