Core series
The games can be grouped into eight generations. The defining point of where a new generation begins is when a new core series Pokémon game is released with a large set of new Pokémon in its Pokédex. Games are also split between core series games and spin-off games. In most core games, the player can choose one out of three Pokémon to start their journey with. Spin-off games give players various options in the way they both obtain and make use of Pokémon.

As of September 2019, over 346 million game units have been sold.
