Tochukaso is the Japanese name of {{wp|Ophiocordyceps sinensis|caterpillar fungus}} (''Ophiocordyceps sinensis''), a real-world {{wp|Parasitoid|endoparasitoid}} fungus that replaces the host tissue and can affect the behavior of its insect host. The fungus is often used in {{wp|traditional Chinese medicine}}, specifically as an {{wp|aphrodisiac}} and for treatment for ailments such as {{wp|fatigue (medical)|fatigue}} and {{wp|cancer}}.
 
In Parasect, the tochukaso has caused {{wp|neoteny}}.
