Poncho met up with Ash and ashfr in the middle of a forest located near North Petalburg. He challenged Ash to a battle, saying that if Ash won, Poncho would buy them cheeseburgers in the next town; if he won, Ash and his friends would have to give him their sandwiches. Ash accepted the challenge. He was originally going to use Grovyle, but a jealous Corphish stepped up to battle in its stead.
Poncho encountered Ash and ashfr in the middle of a forest located near North Petalburg. He challenged Ash to a battle, adding that if he wins he gets their sandwiches, but if he loses he would buy them some cheeseburgers. Ash confidently accepted the challenge, choosing Corphish. Poncho played his drums throughout the match, helping Ludicolo to keep tempo and eavde oncoming attacks with ease. Ash underestimated his opponent's abilities and lost.

Corphish ended up losing the battle, but it refused to accept its defeat. It followed Poncho and Ludicolo into the forest, wanting a rematch. Before Poncho could reply, TRT stole him and Ludicolo. Corphish was able to set them free and send Team Rocket blasting off. Impressed with how strong Corphish was, Poncho agreed to share the sandwiches he received with Ash and his friends.
Corphish refused to accept its defeat and it later found Poncho and Ludicolo and demanded a rematch. Before Poncho could reply, TRT netted him and Ludicolo. Corphish intervene, causing the Meowth balloon to crash and sent the trio blasting off. Impressed with how strong Corphish was, Poncho decided to share the sandwiches he received earlier with the group. Poncho also agreed to a rematch, this time against Ash's Torkoal, though the winner was not revealed.

Poncho and his Ludicolo battled using dancing techniques. Poncho would play his conga drum while Ludicolo was in battle, which encouraged the Pokémon to move about to dodge attacks. Ash felt that Poncho should have kept the dancing to himself.
