In the actual Japanese version, when Butterfree heads out, Ash tells Butterfree he'd explain to his Pokémon that Butterfree ventured out with a cute girlfriend. The precise wording he used was "kawaii kanojo (かわいい かのじょ). Pretty sure that was rock-solid proof before ''I Choose You!'', since this entire thing was about Ash's Butterfree going out to have babies.
