Noland has appeared in two episodes of the anime: Numero Uno Articuno and The Symbol Life.
Noland first appeared in Numero Uno Articuno. Ash and ashfr unknowingly first saw Noland as he took a night flight in his plane alongside his friend Noland. They met him in person at Battle Factory the following day, after stopping one of his out of control inventions. Later, Noland called all of his numerous Pokémon to eat, and explained that the reason he had a high number of Pokémon was becuase of all of the different kinds of battles he could have. To Ash's surprise, Noland then allowed him to choose which Pokémon he wanted to face. Ash, however, had trouble choosing one Pokémon above another. Soon, Noland's friend Articuno made an unexpected appearance, and Noland detailed how he first met the Legendary Pokémon during a flight where he rescued it after noticing Articuno's injured wing.

When Ash and his friends first arrived at the Battle Factory, they saw Noland having trouble with controlling one of his self-made vehicles. After using his Pokémon to stop the vehicle, Ash was introduced to Noland. Later, Noland called all of his numerous Pokémon to eat, and explained the high number of his Pokémon by telling that the more Pokémon he had, the more different kind of battles he could have. To Ash's surprise, Noland then allowed him to choose which Pokémon he wanted to face. Ash, however, had trouble choosing one Pokémon above another. Soon, Ash and his friends found out that the Legendary Pokémon Articuno they had seen last night was actually a friend of Noland's, which he had once saved with his plane when he had found it flying with a hurt wing. Ever since that, they had been good friends, often flying or even battling together, despite the fact that Articuno was technically a wild Pokémon.
Wanting to experience flight like Articuno, Max and Pikachu went for a joyride with Noland. Unfortunately, while they were flying, TRT showed up with their new mecha, attempting to steal all the Battle Factory's Pokémon. Unfortunate for them, Noland sent Articuno against them, freeing the stolen Pokémon, destroying the mecha, and sending the trio blasting off once again. Later that evening, Ash surprised everyone by announcing that he wanted to battle against Articuno. Noland accepted the challenge, and Ash told that he was going to use his Charizard in the battle, which he had called back from the Charicific Valley.

On the next day, Ash and Noland had their battle. After quickly dealing with Team Rocket once again, Articuno and Charizard engaged in a dramatic match, which, despite of Charizard's type advantage, turned out to be rather tough. Eventually, however, Charizard was able to defeat Articuno with its trademark Seismic Toss, although barely. After the battle, Noland admitted his defeat, and handed Ash his first Frontier Symbol, the Knowledge Symbol.

Character
He reappeared in a flashback in A Pyramiding Rage!.
Noland is a strategist, where timing and pinpoint accuracy are critical to his battle technique. Even when his attacks appear to miss his opponent's Pokémon, their secondary effects have equally devastating consequences. Rather than battling with random Pokémon, Noland allows the opponent to choose who they will battle against.

Noland also enjoys inventing things and riding on the airplane that he built.
