In the [[Generation I]] games, and {{game|FireRed and LeafGreen|s}}, and [[Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!]], before the {{player}} reaches Lavender Town, members of [[Team Rocket]] invade the Pokémon Tower and attempt to steal the skulls of {{p|Cubone}} in order to sell them for large amounts of [[Pokémon Dollar|money]]. One Cubone, however, was protected by its mother. The Cubone escaped, but its mother was killed. As a result, the Marowak's ghost remained in the Pokémon Tower, forbidding access to the topmost floor. She appears as a {{OBP|ghost|literal}}, avoids all thrown [[Poké Ball]]s, and scares opponents into being unable to attack. However, with the [[Silph Scope]], it is possible to {{pkmn|battle}} her. Once she is defeated, her soul is calmed, and she departs to the afterlife, granting the player passage to the top floor.

Even after the Silph Scope is used on it, the Marowak ghost will continue to dodge thrown [[Poké Ball]]s (including [[Master Ball]]s), even while {{status|sleep}}ing.

In [[Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!]], the playwr does not battle her at all. Rather, she meets her Cubone and then departs.
