Ash, Misty, and Brock are walking through a city on their way to Ash's next Gym match. Up ahead they see something weird poking out of a bush, and find out that it is a baby Stantler. Ash looks it up on his Pokédex while Brock attempts to lure it out by mimicking classic Stantler behaviors. Brock tries to offer it food, but Stantler remains hesitant and soon produces a nice scent from its antlers. Ash and Misty look on in horror as Brock is oblivious to the herd of Stantler behind him. The Stantler charge and Ash, Misty, and Brock flee as they are chased. The Stantler soon leave them alone and the little Stantler goes back into the bushes. They begin to search for the Stantler, after Brock noticed its leg was injured, and Officer Jenny approaches and takes them back to her office to file a report. Officer Jenny tells them that the herd of Stantler has been terrorizing the town. However, Brock is skeptical and suggests that there must be more to the suddenly disappearing herd.
Upon arriving at a city, Ash and ashfr see something poking out of a bush and identify it as a baby Stantler. Ash looks it up on his Pokédex while Brock attempts to lure it out by mimicking classic Stantler behaviors and then by offering it food. However, Stantler remains hesitant and soon produces a nice scent from its antlers. A herd of Stantler suddenly charges at the trio, forcing them to flee. Once they are gone, the baby Stantler retreats into the bushes. The trio starts searching for the Stantler after Brock noticed its leg was injured, and Officer Jenny approaches and takes them back to her office to file a report. Jenny tells them that the Stantler herd has been terrorizing the town. However, Brock is skeptical and suggests that there must be more to them than meets the eye.

Screams are heard, so Ash, ashfr and Jenny go outside to investigate, and to their surprise it is TRT. The trio perform their motto while running on the spot. After Ash asks, Team Rocket explain that they were attempting to catch all the city park's Stantler, but were forced to abandon their plan after being chased by a herd of Stantler. Misty and Brock are instantly reminded of their earlier run-in. Suddenly a sweet smell wafts over everyone and a herd of Stantler run into town. Team Rocket flee, while Jenny ushers Ash and Misty into the police office for safety. Brock remains outside and witnesses the Stantler seemingly running through light poles and walls. Ash urges Brock to retreat, but Brock stretches out his arms and waits for the herd to hit him. However, the herd of Stantler go right through him, and Ash and Misty are amazed as the illusion begins to fade.
Just then, they find TRT being chased. Brock walks up to the baby Stantler and says he could heal its wound. He goes inside Officer Jenny's office and begins to bandage Stantler's front leg. While he is doing this, Ash, Misty, and Jenny ask how he found this out. Brock says that he noticed that the Stantler were going right through buildings. He finishes healing the young Stantler. It looks at Brock admiringly and then falls asleep on his lap. Officer Jenny is amazed that Brock can feel what is in a Pokémon's heart just by looking at its eyes. Ash asks Brock if it's tempting to just catch and keep Stantler, but Brock thinks it's best if the baby Stantler goes home. Misty claims that Brock has a pretty good heart himself since he cares about Pokémon so much. Team Rocket listens in through a peroscope, and MTR is frustrated that there is only really one Stantler. James admits that he has a plan, and used the trio's remaining funds to get it. While Jessie and Meowth are initially angry, James convinces them that money won't be important if they don't have anything to give to the Giovanni.

Refreshed from an overnight sleepover, Brock releases Stantler into the forest. However Stantler is hesitant, and nudges Brock to show its affection. Brock steps back and yells at Stantler to go away. The Pokémon does so, though is clearly saddened. Despite his stern exterior, Brock is shaken, but knows that Stantler returning to the wild is for the best. From the heights of their Meowth Balloon, Team Rocket soon spot the young Stantler and begin to land. While Ash and his friends return to the city, Brock turns back and is shocked to see Team Rocket's balloon in the distance. With the help of James's Anti-Stantler number 7, Team Rocket catch the baby Stantler to give to the boss. The trio float down to grab their netted catch. Meowth becomes teary eyed from Stantler's cries, but Jessie tells him to shake it off. Meowth spots Brock approaching. James sniggers as he presses a red button, and the Anti-Stantler 7 shoots out spears which stops Brock from passing through, and this allows Team Rocket to make their escape. The trio are shocked to see Brock destroy the mecha. Brock recalls Onix and begins to chase Team Rocket's balloon. Hearing Stantler's cries, Ash orders Pikachu to unleash a Thunderbolt on Team Rocket. However, the attack misses because the balloon is too high up. Just when it seems like Team Rocket are succeeding, a real adult Stantler leaps from a mountain ledge and slices through the hot air balloon and cuts the rope holding the net with Baby Stantler. Ash calls out Bulbasaur to use Vine Whip to catch the net, but Stantler manages to fall out. Brock rushes in and leaps to catch it in time, claiming he is lucky he went to Little League.
The next day, Brock releases Stantler into the forest. However, Stantler is hesitant, and nudges Brock to show its affection. Brock steps back and yells at Stantler to leave; the Big Horn Pokémon sadly does so. Meanwhile, Team Rocket spots Stantler from their Meowth balloon. As Ash and his friends return to the city, Brock turns back and is shocked to see Team Rocket's balloon in the distance. With the help of James's Anti-Stantler number 7, Team Rocket catches the baby Stantler to give to Giovanni. The trio floats down to grab their catch, but Meowth becomes teary-eyed from Stantler's cries. Brock confronts the trio, but James presses a red button, and the Anti-Stantler 7 shoots out spears that stop Brock from passing through, allowing Team Rocket to escape. However, Brock sends out Brock to destroy the mecha and then chases Team Rocket's balloon. Hearing Stantler's cries, Ash orders Pikachu to use Thunderbolt on Team Rocket, but it misses because the balloon is too high up. Ash calls out Bulbasaur to use Vine Whip to catch the net, but Stantler falls out. Brock then rushes in and catches it in time.

Team Rocket have crash landed into the forest. While their shredded balloon remains entangled in the trees, their troubles aren't over yet. They see a herd of Stantler. Thinking it is another illusion, James throws the remote at a Stantler, which bounces off its head. The Stantler then crushes the remote with its hoof and the whole herd stampede Team Rocket causing them to blast off. Meanwhile, Brock and his friends watch on as Stantler returns to its family, and the reunited Stantler group trek back to their mountain home.
