They specialize in using {{p|Growlithe}} in Generation II, [[Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver Versions|its remakes]], and {{pkmn|Sun and Moon}}, a possible [[List of cross-canon references|reference]] to the {{pkmn|anime}}'s [[Officer Jenny]]. In {{3v2|Diamond|Pearl|Platinum}}, they use a combination of the {{p|Hoothoot}} and {{p|Machop}} families. In [[Generation V|Generations V]] and {{gen|VII}}, they tend to use {{OBP|Pokémon|species}} with canine traits, including the aforementioned Growlithe; possibly an allusion to {{wp|police dogs}}. In the [[Battle Subway]], they specialize in defensive Pokémon sets primarily relying on [[status condition]]s, and in the early stages, {{t|Fighting}}- and {{type|Steel}} Pokémon.
 
Although they werenare't Trainers, they also appearedappear as guards to [[Saffron City]] and triedtry to arrest a {{tc|Team Rocket Grunt}} in [[VermilionCerulean City]] in {{game|Red and Blue|s}} (replaced by [[Officer Jenny]] in {{game|Yellow}}), and their remakes {{game|FireRed and LeafGreen|s}}. Another NPC by the name of [[Officer Johnson]] playedplays a minor role in guarding the [[Cipher]] members that [[Duking]] arrested in [[Pokémon Colosseum]].

Police Officers aside from [[Officer Jenny]] have appeared intermittently throughout the {{pkmn|anime}}. Four Police Officers appeared in ''[[SM009|To Top a Totem!]]'', where one used his {{p|Machamp}} to put some logs back on a villager's cart. Three others later appeared and watched as a {{p|Yungoos}}, a {{p|Gumshoos}}, and a {{pkmn2|Totem}} Gumshoos fought some [[Regional variant|Alolan]] {{palo|Rattata}}, and {{p|Raticate}}.
