This card was included in the English {{TCG|Base Set}} as a {{TCG|Trainer card}}, first released in the Japanese {{TCG|Expansion Pack}}, with artwork by [[Keiji Kinebuchi]]. This print was later reprinted in the English {{TCG|Base Set 2}} expansion, the Japanese {{TCG|Nivi City Gym}}, {{TCG|Tamamushi City Gym}}, and {{TCG|Yamabuki City Gym}} {{TCG|Theme Deck}}s, both decks of the Japanese {{TCG|Quick Starter Gift Set}}, and in the English {{TCG|Legendary Collection}} expansion.

It was later reclassified in the English {{TCG|Black & White}} expansion as an {{TCG|Item card}} with new artwork by [[Kent Kanetsuna]], previously released in the Japanese {{TCG|Beginning Set}}, {{TCG|Beginning Set for Girls}}, and {{TCG|Black Collection}}. It was later reprinted in the Japanese {{TCG|Beginning Set +}} and {{TCG|Beginning Set Pikachu Version}} rereleases of the original Black & White Beginning Set, and in the English {{TCG|Plasma Blast}} expansion, first released in the Japanese {{TCG|Blastoise + Kyurem-EX Combo Deck}}.

Energy Retrieval was again reprinted with new artwork by [[5ban Graphics]] as one of the {{TCG|XY-P Promotional cards}} available in the {{TCGMerch|XY|Era|Card Box Xerneas•Yveltal including Energy Card}} from December 13, 2013. This print was later included in February 2015's {{TCG|Primal Clash}} expansion. The Japanese {{TCG|Bandit Ring}} expansion included a {{TCG|Secret card|Secret}} print of Energy Retrieval, which was later printed in the English {{TCG|Ancient Origins}} expansion. The original XY-P Promotional print was made available in a number of subsequent Japanese products, including the {{TCGMerch|XY|Era|Card Box Primal Groudon•Primal Kyogre including Energy Card}}, the {{TCG|Emboar-EX vs Togekiss-EX Deck Kit}}, and the {{TCGMerch|XY BREAK|Era|Card Box Mega Mewtwo X•Mega Mewtwo Y including Energy Card}}. It was reprinted again in the Japanese {{TCG|BREAK Starter Pack}}. It was reprinted as a {{TCG|retro card}} in the English {{TCG|Evolutions}} expansion, originating from the Japanese {{TCG|Expansion Pack 20th Anniversary}} subset, featuring the same artwork as the original print and an updated card template reminiscent of the Original Series layout.
