The reason why it crash the game, is due to it setting to a invalid sound bank, which is due to that 4 4's (invalid) front sprite is unusually huge (256x256), which causes it to overflow from RAM to SRAM which then corrupt the current sound bank identifier address into invalid sound banks. Since invalid sound banks (usually) crashes, 4 4 will (usually) crash due to that. It could actually be encountered without crashing, which is by using the gameshark to prevent sound banks from ever changing (0108EFC0, 0108F0C0), and 4 4 could be encountered without crashing (since sound banks didn't change to invalid). But even doing that, the battle couldn't be continued forward due to the fact 4 4's sprite overflowing also corrupts address that RAM holds (http://datacrystal.romhacking.net/wiki/Pokémon_Red/Blue:RAM_map). Since 256x256 is a ultimately huge size, it could possibly corrupt the whole RAM, turning the whole game into gibberish.
The reason the game may crash is because 4 4's front sprite is an unusually large 256x256 pixels, which causes it to overflow from RAM to SRAM and corrupt the current sound bank identifier address to invalid sound banks, and invalid sound banks usually crash. Even if the game doesn't crash, 4 4's front sprite will overwrite enough RAM to otherwise prevent play.
