With the VI, you can finally venture into the windswept desert on 111. The powerful sandstorm deters most would-be explorers, so no one has yet claimed the valuable treasures lying among the dunes.

Relic Recovery!
The unending sandstorm seems to have uncovered two treasures from the ancient past in the desert's northeast corner. The Root and Claw Fossils belong to two species that once lived in the primordial ocean. The researchers at Devon Corporation back in Rustboro are able to revive any Fossil they receive into a long-lost Pokémon. The Root Fossil becomes the Lileep, while the Claw Fossil turns into the Anorith. Removing either one from their resting place causes the other to sink into the sand, so choose carefully!
Desert Ruins
The unusual arrangement of stones to the south is known as the Desert Ruins. It is believed to mark the resting place of a legendary Pokémon. But with the entrance sealed, you won't be able to investigate until later.
Back to Petalburg City
Now that you've claimed your fourth Badge and combed the desert for treasure, your next stop is Petalburg City. The city is far to the southwest, but there are multiple ways to get there.
* Head northwest around the volcano to Fallarbor Town, then south through Meteor Falls to return to Rustboro.
* Go south from the desert to Mauville City, then west to Verdanturf Town. Cut through Rusturf Tunnel to return to Rustboro.
Once in Rustboro, be sure to stop by Devon Corporation on the way to have the researchers there revive your Fossil Pokémon.

The Petalburg Gym, which specializes in Normal Pokémon, is styled as a traditional dojo with multiple rooms. Each room has a single Trainer who uses special items to gain the upper hand in battle. The sign on each door gives a clue to the strategy of the Trainer in the room behind it. The first two rooms beyond the lobby are labeled "Speed" and "Accuracy". The three rooms farther on are named "Zero Reduction", "Defense", and "Recovery". The final two rooms before the Gym Leader are labeled "Strength" and "One-Hit KO". A minimum of three Gym Trainers must be defeated to reach the Gym Leader. Fighting types like Machop and Makuhita will give you the upper hand here.

In the final room, your father has been waiting for you. Now that you have earned four other Badges, he is now ready to accept your challenge. Norman leads with the first of his two Slaking. Slaking usually leads with Yawn; if you switch out your Pokémon to keep it from falling Sleep, your next Pokémon will be safe from attack. This is due to Slaking's Ability, Truant, which prevents it from attacking every other turn. However, his Vigoroth has no such problem. In fact, the Pokémon is so restless that it can't sleep, due to its Vital Spirit Ability. All three of Norman's Pokémon know Facade, which doubles in power if the user is Burned, Poisoned, or Paralysis, though the Attack penalty incurred by sustaining a Burn still applies. While Ghost Pokémon are usually unaffected by Normal-type attacks, and vice-versa, Norman's entire team can use Faint Attack to deal serious damage to such Pokémon.

Afterwards, your father awards you the Balance, which boosts your Pokémon's Defense by 10% and enables the use of Surf in the field. He also hands you 42 as a gift. Norman then remembers that Wally's parents stopped by a short time ago, looking for you. Visit them in their home next to the Gym, and Wally's father gives you 03 as thanks for helping the young Trainer. In battle, Surf is a strong Water attack; in the field, it allows you to cross bodies of water.

The seaside 118 links the west and east sides of the region together. Several new species of Pokémon can be found here, including Electric types that will be of great value in the upcoming Gym.

Surf's Up!
When you're ready to cross the river, approach the beach and use Surf. Hop on your seafaring Pokémon's back to glide across the water. While Surfing, it is impossible to use the field moves Cut, Strength, or Rock Smash; however, Fly Waterfall Dive are allowed. The Itemfinder can't be used while crossing the waves, but you can use an Escape Rope or a fishing rod while doing so.
Get Good with a Good Rod
The Fisherman on the river's eastern bank believes that Good Rods are really good. Agree with his statement to receive your very own III, a mid-level fishing rod that can catch even more kinds of Pokémon than the III.
Gabby and Ty
After your first interview on the south side of 111, the intrepid news team can be found searching for their next story on the eastern bank of 118's river. Accept their challenge to another Double Battle and be sure to give them a great interview when the dust settles!
Meet up with Steven
As you leave the beach, you are noticed by Steven. He hasn't seen you since your first meeting in Granite Cave, and is pleased to see how much you have grown as a Trainer. He wonders if you will raise Pokémon of all types, or only a certain one.

Known for its sweltering heat and sudden rainfalls, the spacious 119 runs north from 118 to Fortree City. The area is filled with patches of tall grass, which hide Trainer and wild Pokémon alike. The extreme weather conditions make this an ideal setting for the Weather Institute, located on the north end of this tropical rainforest.

The Mimic Circle
A handful of Trainers in the southernmost patch of long grass like to copy the movements of any Trainer passing by, collectively earning them the "Mimic Circle" nickname. They move when you do, so outmaneuver them to pin them down and start battling. Each one remains in a certain area, which gives you a chance to corner them.

Rest Stop
A small cabin stands beyond the patch of long grass. Speak to the kind woman inside, and she'll let you and your Pokémon take a quick break to restore their health.

Weather Institute
Located on the north end of the route, the Weather Institute is a high-tech facility used to study and research the intricacies of weather patterns across Hoenn. This research seems to have attracted the attention of Team Magma/Team Aqua, as several Grunts have been stationed outside.

Before entering this part of the route, it is advisable to bring at least the Bicycle and a Flying such as Swellow, if you don't have a Fire-Type, like Blaziken to make the first trip through this Route easier since the Trainers on this route have Bug or Grass Pokémon. For the first part of the route is tall grass that prevents the bike from moving through it. During this part of the route a group of Bug-type Trainers known as the Mimic Circle will mimic your movement pattern.

The next part of the path has a water area you can Surf on. There are 6 random spots based on the phrase in Dewford Town. Feebas can be obtained here with the Fishing. North from here is a Berry grove and a section that contains a hidden item. After crossing the bridge and the next patch of tall grass, using the Mach Bike to climb the slope would be suitable, rather than trekking through the tall grass patch to the right. As you head north you will find the Weather Institute as well as two Team MagmaR / Team AquaS grunts guarding the bridge to the east so you will have to deal with the ones inside the building first.

Rest and Restore Health
Visit the back room to find some Team Magma/Team Aqua Grunts searching the place. Before battling them, head to the northwest room to find a comfy bed and rest your Pokémon before continuing on. There is also a PC here in case you should need to reorganize your team.

Once inside, you'll notice to the upper left a bed and a PC near a little girl, which you can use to heal and switch out your team if need be. Here on the first floor are two Team Magma> / Team Aqua grunts you'll have to face. After the battle access to the second floor is available.
Looking for Answers
When you reach the second floor, you find the source of the disturbance: Magma Admin Courtney/Aqua Admin Shelly is harassing the researchers! She is here looking for information about extreme weather conditions, and to steal one of the Institute's Castform, a rare species of Pokémon. She can't allow you to meddle in the team's plans, and draws you into battle.

<br>
VS Tabitha
After reaching the second floor you'll find two more grunts and an Administrator.

After the battle, the professor will award you with a Castform which holds a Type-enhancing item, an item which enhances Water moves. If your party is full you'll have to use the PC on the first floor to empty a spot before he can give it to you. After that return to Route 119.
The Next Step
The Admin simply shrugs off her defeat, claiming that the team has other plans before she and the Grunts leave the building. As thanks for your help, one of the researchers even rewards you with a new Pokémon, Castform, which changes its type and appearance based on the current weather.

After you defeat your rival, they will award the 02 before leaving, but you'll need the Badge from your upcoming Gym match against the Fortree Gym. Heading up, defeating two more Trainers and heading east reaches Fortree City.
Later...
Come back after earning your final Badge at the Sootopolis Gym to use Waterfall and find a rare Berry patch with Hondew Berries as well as a track for the Bicycle to find a Vitamin.
Fortree City
Due to an invisible Pokémon, you can't enter the Fortree Gym yet, so you will have to head east to 120 first to collect a Key Item that will deal with this problem. In the upper left house next to the Pokémon Center is a girl that will trade you Skitty (nicknamed Skitt) for a Pikachu. The house next door will give you a 10 in exchange for guessing which hands has a hidden coin. (right, right, left).
Desk and chair shop
The building in the lower right corner has a shop where you can purchase decorations for your Secret Base.

Head east to the tall grass in the upper right corner and cross it and then head west to reach a bridge. As you cross it you will quickly see Steven Stone. When you talk to him he'll show you an invisible Pokémon when you admit you're ready to face it. The Pokémon which is a Lv 30 Kecleon, can easily be dealt with by working around its Color Change by either using a move that is not resistant against its own type, or using a move that is effective against the first move used to create a combo.
After the battle, Steven will give you List of key items in Generation III to expose other invisible Pokémon before leaving. Now we can head to the Fortree Gym. On the way back head to the stairs that leads to the river and after defeating another invisible Kecleon, use Surf to head south to find the Scorched Slab and collect 11 inside.

Fortree City cont.
Once you defeat her/him, your friend rewards you with 02. It's a strong move in battle and even more useful when used in the field, though you'll need to win the Gym Badge from the next city first. She/He then runs off, leaving you to continue on to Fortree City.
Now that you are back, head to the Gym and use your new Devon Scope to find an invisible Kecleon who will run away. Enter once your team is ready.

The puzzle for this Gym is that you will have to walk through revolving doors and plan it correctly to head to the next part of the Gym without it stopping you. This becomes slightly more complex the further you go through but the goal is to reach Winona in the upper left corner of the Gym.
When you face Winona, the hardest part of her team is that her Altaria knows Earthquake which is trouble for Electric, Rock, and Steel Pokémon. If your team doesn't have an Ice move then SolrockR/LunatoneS is a good choice because their Levitate renders them immune to Earthquake.

After defeating Winona she will give you the Feather which will allow all Pokémon Lv 70 or below to obey you without question and also allows you to use the HM move Fly outside of battle.
