As a Machoke, he was a member of the team Blue constructed on his journey across Kanto to complete the Pokédex. He is first seen out of its Poké Ball when it was accidentally traded to Red due to a mix-up that left Red with Blue's main team members and vice-versa. Just like Charmeleon and the rest of the Pokémon Red inadvertently received, he was disobedient and more than ready to attack his new Trainer, but still used to the harsh training regime Blue gave his Pokémon, he would regularly go on runs with its teammates and train along with them. In Red's care, however, he would grow to adopt the boy's suave and lax tendencies when it came to training, a factor that would later surprise Blue when the Pokémon would return with its teammates.
Machamp first appeared as a Machoke in A Tale of Ninetales, when Machoke is accidentally traded to Red alongside his other Pokémon. During the three days that Red has them he attempts to get them to relax and open up to him, with little success. A few days later, during which the only new Pokémon Red had captured were a Krabby and Diglett due to their disobedience, Machoke was pitted in a battle against a wild Ninetales when Pika injured it using Toxic and forced it to run towards Red's new party. Though he initially failed to hold its own against the fox's intense flames, the tables turned when he suddenly evolved into a Machamp, due to being traded, and subdued the enemy using his four strong arms. The two boys then each threw a Poké Ball, one of which captured Ninetales. Though Blue didn't object when Red claimed his ball had caught it, Blue argued that it was his Machamp that weakened it, so he should keep it, which he did. They then traded back, while keeping the caring attitude that Red installed in them.

A few days later, during which the only new Pokémon Red had captured were a Krabby and Diglett due to its disobedience (though he notes that they wouldn't bite anymore), he was pitted in a battle against a wild Ninetales when Pika injured it using Toxic and forced it to run towards Red's new party, and Red sent out Machoke to defend himself. Though he initially failed to hold its own against the fox's intense flames, the tables turned when it suddenly evolved into a Machamp, due to being traded, and subdued the enemy using his four strong arms. The two boys then each threw a Poké Ball, one of which captured Ninetales. Though Blue didn't object when Red claimed his ball had caught it, Blue argued that it was his Machamp that weakened it, so he should keep it, which he did.
In A Charizard...and a Champion, Machamp is used in Blue's battle against Red and his Snor during the Pokémon League.

Machamp started off by blocking Snor with his four arms and preventing him from attacking. After a brief fight of strength Machamp easily lifts Snor with his four arms, before spinning him about to render Snor dizzy and slamming him onto the floor. After Snor hits the ground Red quietly tells Snor to use Harden in anticipation of Machamp's next attack. However, Machamp instead attacks the ground, using the shattered debris as a lever to catapult Snor into the air and out of the battlefield. Just as Snor is about to be disqualified for going out of bounds he plummets from mid-air and crushes Machamp with a Double-Edge and Toxic combo. Noting Machamp to be down to a third of its health, Blue switches in to Ninetales.
Machamp wouldn't appear for quite some time until the Indigo League tournament, where he was pitted in a battle against Snor, Red's Snorlax, and with his powerful arms held Snor's arms and legs in place, then adeptly lifted the heavy Pokémon and subjected him to a combination of Submission and Slam attacks, drearily weakening him before sending Snor flying sky-high. However, the maneuverable Snorlax then exploited this opportunity by using an aerial Double-Edge attack combined with a Toxic that almost fainted Machamp, forcing Blue to recall the Pokémon.

He is then seen in flashback in the Yellow, where he battles a wild Magneton in the Kanto and uses Focus Energy to increase his critical-hit ratio before defeating it with a strong finger thrust, though he injured a leg in the struggle before.
In a flashback shown in Electro Magneton, Machamp battled a wild Magneton in the Kanto and used Focus Energy to increase his critical-hit ratio before defeating it with a strong finger thrust, though he injured a leg in the struggle before.

Much later, he makes another appearance fighting Snor, this time with Blue's help, in FireRed & LeafGreen. Here he wins easily with a strong Seismic Toss followed by the weight-targeting Low Kick maneuver. After being hit by Pika's Iron Tail, the fight ends in a tie with both Red and Blue reaching their destination at the same time (and thereby unlocking the Frenzy Plant and Blast Burn moves). He fights Orm's pack of Shuckle after this using his Hyper Beam but is unable to do much more than provide as a distraction, winning the fight for his owner when Blue's Horn Drill finishes them off. He is also seen in Trainer Tower when Blue sends out all of his Pokémon to try to rescue his grandfather, but is not seen fighting.
In Double Dealing with Deoxys, Machamp is used in a double battle alongside Blue against Red and his Snor and Gyara. Scizor, with Machamp in his pincers, flies above Snor and dropps Machamp, who proceeds to grab Snor's body and use Seismic Toss. Machamp follows up by rushing in front of Snor and and performing Low Kick, tripping Snor and sending him crashing into the ground, knocking him out. Blue follows by having Scizor attack Gyara with Steel Wing, knocking him out too. Red next sends out Pika and Aero as his last two Pokémon. Red has Aero use Take Down on Scizor, which dealt no recoil damage due to his Rock Head Ability. Aero follows up with Dragon Claw on Scizor, so Blue switches him out for Blue. Seeing an opening, Red has Pika attack Machamp with an electric attack. To Red's surprise, the attack is suddenly redirected. Blue smirks and reveals that Rhydon has the Lightning Rod Ability, which causes all Electric moves to be redirected towards it. Since Pika's Electric attacks had no effect, Pika jumps into the air and delivers an Iron Tail onto Machamp's head. The battle then ends in a tie.

In Don't Doubt Deoxys, Blue sends out Machamp and Scizor to attack Orm's horde of Shuckle, which has bound itself to Blue. Machamp blasts that Shuckle with Hyper Beam, while Scizor attacks with Metal Claw. Rhydon then shows up from underground and defeats the head Shuckle, scattering the rest. Blue reveals that Scizor and Machamp were simply a diversion for Rhydon to attack.

Personality and Characteristics
Like most of Blue's Pokémon Machamp is serious, calm, and focused. Machamp is slightly reserved as well and tries to stay out of the way unless he is needed. He is very loyal to his Trainer and is the powerhouse of Blue's team, often overwhelming his opponents with his strength.
