Unlike most Pokémon, Malamar is an evil Pokémon with a mysterious past. It is one of the few Pokémon in the anime to have exhibited independently malicious behavior, rather than following the orders of a malicious human or natural behavior, such as defending territory. Malamar had no trouble with its plans for world domination as it hypnotized people and Pokémon to do its bidding. However, Trainers with a strong bond with their Pokémon such as {{Ash}} with {{AP|Pikachu}} and [[James]] with {{TP|James|Inkay}} are able to break free of Malamar's hypnotic control, or by pain as seen in Meowth's case, snapping out of it by {{m|Fury Swipes|scratching}} himself - or others such as Ash - repeatedly in the face.
