The Azalea Gym has undergone quite a few changes since the days of Gold and Silver. This time around, the Gym is divided into three separate platforms (entrance, center, and rear), and Trainers must ride the spider-themed karts over webs made of rope to reach the Gym Leader. It may seem confusing, but the karts will always make the first turn they come to. To reach the first junior Trainer (Bug Catcher Al), step on the center kart; otherwise, take the left one to the center platform to fight Bug Catcher Benny. To battle Bug Catcher Josh, flip the blue lever and step on the kart. Ride the kart back to the center platform, and flip the blue switch again, before riding it to the northwest to fight Twins Amy & May. Flip the blue switch by the twins, and ride the kart south, where you'll flip the red switch. Step on the kart again to reach Bugsy at the rear of the Gym.
The Azalea Gym is crawling with Bug Pokémon. Fire-, Flying-, and Rock Pokémon all have an advantage when battling insects. The Gym's design includes several Spinarak-like lifts that crawl across planks suspended over large spider webs. At the entrance, take the southwest lift to reach the center platform. Ignore the blue switch here, and take the next lift to the northwest corner. Flip the switch here and take the lift to the west side of the center platform. Flip the red switch and ride the lift to the Gym Leader.

The biggest challenge with Bugsy is his Scyther. This mantis' high Attack lets it hit hard with U-turn before switching out. When used after Leer, this move inflicts even greater damage. The best defense is using Rock Pokémon, like Geodude and Onix, which take little damage from Scyther's blades. Offensively, TM39 can be used to teach Rock Tomb, a strong attack that lowers the target's Speed.

Defeated, Bugsy awards you the Hive, which ensures obedience from all Pokémon up to level 30, and enables the use of Cut in the field. He also hands over 89 as a prize.

After his defeat, Bugsy awards you the Hive. This Badge commands obedience from all Pokémon of level 30 or less, and allows the use of Cut in the field. He also gives you 89 as a prize. Ride the karts back out of the Gym, and rest up. Head west towards Ilex Forest, and you'll be stopped by that red-haired thief.
Rival battle 2
Be sure to rest up after defeating the Gym, as Silver ambushes you near the western gate.

This large, shadowy forest is a natural maze. It has become so overgrown in recent years that a handful of new trees have sprouted up, but one has chosen an inconvenient spot to grow, blocking the path north past the Ilex Shrine. Without 01, no Trainers can make it through the hardy forest.

Rescue the wily Farfetch'd
Rescue the Farfetch'd!
Azalea's Charcoal Man has not seen his apprentice since he went into the forest. He can be found just north of the entrance, and it seems that the two Farfetch'd that cut down trees for them have wandered off and gotten lost. They get spooked easily, so you must sneak up from behind to catch them.
Azalea's charcoal maker hasn't seen his apprentice since he went into the forest. You'll find him not far from the entrance, but the two Farfetch'd that help cut down the trees for charcoal have run off. They get spooked easily, so you'll have to sneak up on them both from behind to catch them.
* The first Farfetch'd is pretty simple to catch. Located just east of the apprentice, you must step on the pile of twigs south of the bird to get its attention. Avoid the other pile of twigs, and loop around the grove of trees to grab it from behind.
* The second duck is a little trickier to catch. You'll approach it from the south, but you need to chase it to the northeast corner, surrounded by three trees. Step on the twigs to the east, avoid the pile to the north, and approach it from the west.
After both Farfetch'd have been rounded up, the Charcoal Maker walks up, and gives you 01 as thanks for saving his business. If you return to the Charcoal Kiln in Azalea, the apprentice will give you a free Type-enhancing item as a reward. Since you already have the Hive Badge, you are free to explore the rest of the forest.

Pass by the Ilex Shrine, and continue to the northeast. Pick up the X Attack and the Antidote near the pond, and walk to the east. Circle around to the south to reach another Move Tutor.

The Headbutt Guy
* The first duck is located a short distance to the east of the apprentice. Step on the pile of twigs south of it to attract its attention, then loop around the grove of trees to reach it.
* The second duck is a bit more difficult to catch. It begins in the northwest, but needs to be chased into the northeast corner, into a group of three trees. Step on the twigs to the east, avoid the twigs to the north, and approach it from the west.

In the center of the forest, east of the small pond, is a guy that will offer to teach your Pokémon a useful move. Like in Gold and Silver, headbutting a tree may knock a Pokémon out of it. The difference is, unlike Gold and Silver where you could only headbutt small pine trees, this time you can headbutt any tree. This is the only way to find Pokémon like Pineco, Heracross, and Aipom, so put it to good use!
Once Far and Fetch'd have been rounded up, the Charcoal Man shows up and rewards you with 01. Return to the Charcoal Kiln afterwards to receive a Type-enhancing item from the apprentice as thanks.

North of the Move Tutor is the second of the Kimono Girls, who seems to be lost. Agree to help her, and your partner Pokémon will show her the way. Don't forget to grab the Ether nearby.
Move Tutor
In the center of the forest, east of the pond, is a man who offers to teach Headbutt to a Pokémon. In battle, Headbutt has a power of 70 and a 30% chance of causing the target to Status ailment. In the field, it can be used on any tree in an attempt to knock down a Pokémon. This is the only way to find Pineco, Heracross, and Aipom.

Another TM
Kimono Girl 2
In the northeast part of the forest, you meet the second of the Kimono Girls, who seems to be lost. Agree to help her, and your lead Pokémon shows her the way out.

Inside the forest's northern gate is a woman with a Butterfree behind the counter; talk to her to receive 12. Exit the gate to 34.
Lured into Action
Inside the forest's northern gate, behind the counter, is a woman with her Butterfree. Speak to her to receive 12. Taunt prevents the target from using status moves for several turns.

Route 34 is a fairly short route that connects Ilex Forest and Goldenrod City, but one of the most important areas in the game is located here. The Pokémon Daycare, like its counterpart on Kanto's Route 5, allows Trainers to leave their Pokémon to be raised by an elderly couple. As you approach, Lyra/Ethan shows up to visit the couple, who is revealed to be her/his grandparents. Your neighbor gives you her/his phone number before leaving, and the Daycare Man stops you on your way out to give you both his and his wife's numbers. This way, you can call to check on your Pokémon anytime. Any Pokémon left here will gain 1 EXP for every step you take. However, the Johto Daycare accepts up to two Pokémon to raise at once. If both a male and female are left together, you may return to find that the old couple has found an egg. Keep the egg in your party like you did with Mr. Pokémon's Togepi, and it will hatch a few hours later. This is the only way to get more members of a certain species (like Eevee) and baby Pokémon (like Pichu)!  If you don't have a compatible male-female pair, not to worry - track down a Ditto; that shapeshifting blob can mate with almost anything.
34 is a seaside route stretching between Ilex Forest and Goldenrod City. The Pokémon Day Care, where an elderly couple care for Trainers' Pokémon, is located here.

Make sure to trade phone numbers with Picnicker Gina near the fence - after beating her in a rematch, she'll give you a Leaf Stone.

Head north to reach Johto's tech-mecca, Goldenrod City.
Pokémon Day Care
As you approach from the south, Lyra/Ethan approaches from the north to visit the couple, who turn out to be her/his grandparents. She/He gives you her/his phone number before leaving, and the Day-Care Man gives out both his and his wife's numbers. This allows you to check up on your Pokémon at any time.

Any Pokémon left here will gain one experience point for every step taken. However, the Johto Day Care accepts up to two Pokémon to raise at once. If both a male and female are left together, the old couple may find an Egg. Travel with the Egg for a while, and it will eventually hatch. This is the only way to get more members of a certain species, like Eevee, and baby Pokémon, like Pichu. In place of a compatible pair, a shape-shifting Ditto makes a great substitute.

Later...
Return to Route 34 once you can surf. Swim south from the Daycare to find a small path leading into the trees. A trio of Ace Trainers challenges you, and defeating all three gets you a In-battle effect item, a single-use item that allows the use of two-turn moves (like SolarBeam) to attack right away, without charging up first. All three of these trainers mainly specialize in Waters so bring an Electric or a Grass to bring them down.
