Welcome to Ecruteak, a historical city where the past meets the present.  The city is shrouded in mystery, as all but one of Johto's legendary Pokémon have ties to the area.  The area has its share of unique landmarks, including the Kimono Dance Theater and the twin towers; the Burned Tower in the west, and the Tin Tower in the east.

Welcome to Ecruteak, "a historical city where the past meets the present".  The city has an air of mystery surrounding it, with all but Celebi of Johto's legendary Pokémon having ties to the area.  When you step inside the Pokémon Center, you will meet Bill, the inventor of the PC Storage System.  The city is home to a few unique attractions; the Kimono Dance Theater for one, as well as the twin towers: the Burned Tower in the west and the Tin Tower in the east.

Bill to the Rescue!
Bill's Time Capsule
Stop by the Pokémon Center and you will find Bill. It seems that he has just finished working on the Time Capsule, a service found on every Pokémon Center's second floor that allows Trainers to "trade with the past". This means that you can now trade between Crystal and Red and Blue Yellow. The Time Capsule will take until the next day to be fully operational, but there's plenty to do in the meantime!

The Time Capsule will take until the next day to be fully operational.

Find That Treasure
Find That Treasure!
Make sure to visit the house between the Pokémon Center and the Gym. Talk to the guy inside, and he'll give you the List of key items in Generation II. The Itemfinder is a handy tool that reacts to hidden objects, alerting you to items lying hidden nearby.

Burned Tower
The charred, crumbling ruins of the Burned Tower can be found in the city's northwest district.  Formerly known as the Brass Tower, it was once as majestic as the Tin Tower to the east.  Built 700 years ago, it was said to be the roost of Lugia.  But 150 years ago, the tower was struck by a lightning bolt that ignited a fire that raged for three days.  The silver Pokémon and the Ho-Oh that roosted on Tin Tower escaped to the skies unharmed, and a sudden downpour quenched the fire.  The silver Pokémon flew off, while the rainbow Pokémon resurrected three nameless Pokémon that perished in the blaze before flying off as well.

When you enter the tower, you are immediately approached by Eusine, a researcher of the legendary beasts who is especially interested in Suicune.  The local Gym Leader, Morty, is also here investigating the trio.  Walk to the center area, where Silver complains about not seeing Suicune before challenging you to a battle.

The Burned Tower
The site of the charred, crumbling ruins of the Brass Tower is located in the city's northwest district. Now known as the Burned Tower, it was once as majestic as the Tin Tower to the east. Built 700 years ago, it was said to be the roost of Lugia. About 150 years ago, a lightning bolt struck the tower, igniting a fire that raged for three days. The Lugia that roosted here, and the Ho-Oh that roosted on Tin Tower, escaped to the skies unharmed, and a sudden downpour quenched the fire.  The silver Pokémon was chased off by the inferno, while the rainbow Pokémon resurrected three nameless Pokémon that perished in the blaze before flying off as well.

Immediately upon entering the tower, you will be approached by Eusine, an authority on Johto's legends, especially those involving Suicune. Not far off is Morty, Ecruteak's Gym Leader, who is also investigating the beast trio. Bring along a Pokémon that knows Rock Smash, or you won't get very far.

The battle causes the weakened floor to crumble, and you fall to the floor below, landing in front of the three legendary beasts.  They do not react at first, but awaken when you approach them.  Raikou and Entei run off immediately, but Suicune pauses for a moment before following the others.  Eusine meets you on your way out, and thanks you for waking Suicune.

Tin Tower
The Tin Tower is a sacred place, and is off-limits to all but a few people.  A group of monks known as the Wise Trio prevent anyone from reaching the tower for now.  Two List of key items in Generation II List of key items in Generation II are required to enter and scale the tower.

After seeing Suicune elsewhere in Johto and obtaining the List of key items in Generation II, the Wise Trio lets you inside the tower.  Suicune waits patiently on the ground floor for a pure-hearted Trainer.  It's the only one of its kind, so save the game before battling it.  Start off with Grass- and Electric attacks to weaken it, then follow up with Fire-, Water-, and Ice moves to whittle down its remaining health.

Later on, the Wise Trio rewards you for capturing all three legendary beasts with the List of key items in Generation II.  This rainbow-colored feather calls Ho-Oh back to its former roost at the top of the tower.  Stock up on Ultras, and bring a party that is capable of inflicting status ailments in order to wear it down faster.

After battling the rival, the floor opens up beneath you, dropping you to the basement floor below, where you find yourself at the feet of the legendary beasts!  Standing motionless like statues, the trio doesn't react to your presence at first. When you step up onto the platform, the three awaken - Raikou and Entei run off immediately, but Suicune pauses for a moment before following the others.  Eusine meets you on your way out, thanking you for awakening Suicune. Now that the beasts have been awoken, you can track Raikou and Entei across the region with your Pokégear's Map function (once you fight them in battle). Now that you've explored the tower and awoken the beasts, you are free to challenge the Ecruteak Gym.

Tin Tower
You can enter the Tin Tower once you win the Fog Badge from Ecruteak Gym, but now that Suicune, Raikou, and Entei have been awakened, the Wise Trio will prevent you from reaching the tower.

Go south to find an Ultra, and south again to get a Potion.  Nab the Escape Rope in the southwest, then climb the northwest stairs.

6F has a simple layout that serves as a transition between the ramps on the lower floors and what lies above.  The next three floors use a series of warp tiles for quick navigation.

8F
The next warp takes you to the north side of 9F, and the one after that brings you back to the east side of this floor.  Pick up the Potion to the northwest and take one last warp to the center of 9F.

Start off by using status-inflicting moves, like Spore or Thunder Wave, to wear it down.  Follow up with Water- or Electric attacks to inflict double the damage.  Use caution with Rock attacks, as Ho-Oh takes four times the normal damage from such moves.  Then slowly chip away at its remaining health with Fire-, Grass-, Fighting-, Bug-, or Steel attacks, as moves of these types only inflict half- or quarter-damage.

Later...
{| align="center" style="background: #gold color; roundy; border: 5px solid #gold color light;"
Return with the List of key items in Generation II from the Radio Tower Director, and the three monks will let you through to the tower, where you'll face Suicune on the first floor.

The Ecruteak Gym is dedicated to Ghost Pokémon. Pure Normals, like Sentret or Raticate, are immune to Ghost-type attacks, so teaching them non-Normal moves (like Surf or Dig) will allow them to damage the ghosts without much fear of retaliationBe careful of Mean Look, which prevents the affected Pokémon from switching - not a real problem by itself, but a Pokémon that is trapped because of that move is a perfect target for a curse.  Be wary of Morty's invisible floors, and you will reach the Gym Leader in no time.
The Ecruteak Gym is dedicated to Ghosts. These spirits take double the damage from Ghost- and Dark attacks, and are normally unaffected by Normal- and Fighting attacks.  However, a Pokémon with Foresight can disable these immunities.  Bring along some extra Potions, since two of Morty's Pokémon know Curse, which drains the target's health every turnIt's also good to bring a few Status ailment healing items in order to disrupt his Gengar's Hypnosis-Dream Eater combo.
