The etymology of Ho-oh is not derived from the Chinese FengHuang, but rather the Japanese equivalent which is simply called the Hō-ō. The mythologies of both oriental phoenixes are quite similar, the only difference is the name. Ho-oh is simply a morphed version of Hō-ō, which is the real Japanese version of the phoenix.
