To the reader, it is revealed that Ruby and Sapphire met as young children when Norman first attempted the test to become a Gym Leader. Back then, Ruby was a rowdy boy who enjoyed battling, whereas Sapphire was docile and feminine. Nonetheless, they admired each other and had fun playing, until one day when they encountered a wild Salamence that attacked them. Ruby attempted to defend Sapphire with his Pokémon, but suffered a Dragon Claw to his forehead which left a severe injury. The boy ended up successfully chasing away the Salamence, but Sapphire was horrified at the sight of his injuries and began to cry out of fear, much to Ruby's shock. Not long after, Norman ended up failing the Gym Leader test and went away on a training journey, leaving his family alone; Ruby took both incidents to heart and grew to resent Pokémon battles, fearing that he had tainted Sapphire's innocence. Sapphire, on the other hand, realised that her own weakness had caused Ruby to be gravely hurt for her sake, and resolved to become stronger so as not to be a burden. This resulted in the two of them switching personalities and interests, hoping that if they ever met their childhood playmate again, they would be able to show how much they'd changed.

Both Trainers snap out of their flashbacks as their mentors evacuate them and encourage them to not give up. The four of them gather to think of a new plan - Ruby suggests that the key lies in Maxie and Archie, since the Orbs controlling Kyogre and Groudon possessed them. Wallace realises that Sapphire has a fragment of the Grand Meteor she found at Mt. Chimney, and proposes that they use the inhibiting effects of the meteor to force the Red and Blue Orbs out of the villains. With Zuzu and Toro attacks, Ruby and Sapphire amplify the meteor's power into two separate beams, rebounded by Absol's Magic Coat held together with help from Wallace and Winona, managing to strike the leaders in the foreheads where the Blue and Red Orbs are held. The attack manages to break Maxie and Archie out of their trances, but results in a massive explosion of energy, catching Ruby and Sapphire in the middle as everyone else attempts to evacuate...
