The episode starts with {{Ash}}, {{an|Misty}} and {{an|Brock}} walking through the forest, and, according to the narrator, still heading for [[Violet City]]. They come across a beautiful looking valley, which they will have to pass through in order to continue on their way. Ash is proclaiming his eagerness to continue, when the ground starts shaking and some large rocks fall the cliff above. On the ledge on the same cliff sit [[Jessie]], [[James]] and {{MTR}}, who are looking very relived at how the rocks missed them. Just as Meowth cracks another awful pun, there is more shaking and the section of rock they are sitting on falls away beneath them. They fall into some trees below and get tangled up into a load of vines. At this point the title screen cuts in.

Ash is just about to capture it when Brock stops him, saying that because its tusks are so short, it must be very young, and that he should catch it because it needs a good Pokémon breeder. Ash and Brock then start arguing over who would be the best Trainer for it, when Misty cuts in to tell them that the Donphan is walking away. At this, Brock calls out his {{TP|Brock|Onix}}. The Donphan turns around and looks surprised. Brock tells Onix to use {{m|Tackle}}. Onix throws Donphan back, but Donphan recovers by rolling into a ball and rolling fast back at Onix. Onix falls down and Misty comments how fast the Donphan was. Brock calls Onix back to its [[Poké Ball]] and Ash cuts in front, sending out his new {{AP|Heracross}}. Heracross uses Tackle, sending Donphan flying backwards for a rough landing. Donphan jumps back up and uses what appears to be {{m|Rollout}}. Ash tells Heracross to use {{m|Horn Attack}}, whacking Donphan out of the way. Donphan crashes into a tree, and Ash tells Heracross to move in for the final attack. It is then decided that they will steal a Donphan to aid their efforts. The trio steals Rochelle's Donphan that was seen earlier by capturing it in a net and flying away with it in their balloon. The stolen Donphan does not immediately obey Team Rocket, however, after James offers it a meal of plants and leaves that he collected, the Donphan begins to help them. Their efforts to find the amberite were not fruitful however, as for some reason which is unknown at this stage, the stolen Donphan cannot find any amberite.
