With the Slowpoke safe, you are free to challenge your second Gym.  The [[Azalea Gym]] is crawling with {{t|Bug}}-types, so if you chose {{p|Cyndaquil}} as your starter, you'll be in great shape.  Other Trainers will have to rely on their {{t|Flying}}-types, like Pidgey and Hoothoot, to get the job done.  {{t|Rock}}-types are also good here, so Geodude or Onix are great to use against [[Bugsy]]'s {{p|Scyther}}, since they are partially resistant to its {{m|Fury Cutter}} attack.

After defeating him, Bugsy awards you with the {{badge|Hive}} and {{TM|49|Fury Cutter}}, a weak Bug-type move that doubles in power for every successful hit.  The Hive Badge commands attention from all of your Pokémon at level 30 or less, and also allows the use of {{m|Cut}} outside of battle.

With your shiny new badge, you're free to head through Ilex Forest on the way to [[Goldenrod City]] - until your rival shows up.

This large, shadowy forest is a natural maze.  It has become so overgrown in recent years that a handful of new trees have sprouted up, but one has grown in the most inconvenient spot, blocking the path past the Ilex Shrine.  Without {{HM|01|Cut}}, no Trainers can make it through the hardy forest.

{{to|Azalea}}'s charcoal maker hasn't seen his apprentice since he went into the forest. You'll find him not far from the entrance, it seems that the {{p|Farfetch'd}} that {{m|Cut|cuts}} down the trees for the charcoal maker has wandered off, and got lost in the forest.  It gets spooked easily, so you'll have to loop around behind it to chase it back to the apprentice. Don't forget to pick up the [[Revive]] nearby.  Once it's rescued, the charcoal maker shows up and rewards you with {{HM|01|Cut}}! If you return to the Charcoal Kiln in Azalea, the apprentice will give you a {{DL|Type-enhancing item|Charcoal}} as thanks. <br> Since you already have the {{badge|Hive}} from [[Azalea Gym]], you are free to explore the rest of the forest. 

 

There are some hidden items in the forest, they are hidden at the blind alleys between the trees. These items are: Full Heal, Super Potion and Ether.

In the center of the forest, east of the small pond, is a green-haired guy that will give you a very useful TM. Once you reach him he will give you {{TM|02|Headbutt}}, a strong attack that also has a helpful function outside of battle. If you have a Pokémon {{m|headbutt}} one of the small pine trees across Johto, you may knock a sleeping Pokémon out of the tree. This is the only way to find Pokémon like {{p|Pineco}}, {{p|Heracross}}, and {{p|Aipom}}, so put it to good use!

Inside the forest's northern [[gate]] is a woman with a {{p|Butterfree}} behind the counter. If you speak with her, she will give you {{TM|12|Sweet Scent}}. This move can be used in the field to lure wild Pokémon to you. It also lowers the opponent's evasion during battle. Exit the gate to {{rt|34|Johto}}.

This short route connects [[Ilex Forest]] and [[Goldenrod City]], but one of the most important areas is located here.  The [[Pokémon Daycare]], like its counterpart on Kanto's Route 5, allows Trainers to leave their Pokémon to be raised by an elderly man.  Any Pokémon left here will gain 1 [[EXP]] for every step you take.  However, the Johto Daycare accepts up to two Pokémon to raise at once.  If both a male and female are left together, you may return to find that the old couple has found an [[Pokémon Egg|egg]].  Keep the egg in your party like you did with Mr. Pokémon's {{p|Togepi}}, and it will hatch a few hours later.  This is the only way to get more members of a certain species (like {{p|Eevee}}) and new "baby" Pokémon (like {{p|Pichu}})! If you don't have a compatible male-female pair, than track down a {{p|Ditto}} - that shapeshifting blob can mate with almost anything. <br><br> Head north to reach Johto's tech-mecca, [[Goldenrod City]].
