I have been a fan of Pokémon for a decade now, starting in 1997 (aged 7) when my Japanese friend introduced me to Pocket Monsters. He gave my friends and I some Pokémon merchandise from Japan on many occasions. I still have Japanese Horsea, Ditto and Zubat stickers on my closet, as well as a very tiny Charizard sticker (two of them actually, though identical). In an old money tin I also have some Pokémon postal stamps (one is of Bellossom, back when it was blue-skinned rather than green, before Gold and Silver were released).
I bought Red version in 1998 when it was released in Australia. My Japanese friend helped me through it at the start; I remember him telling me, one afternoon, that my homework for the night was to defeat all the trainers on the route east of Cerulean City.
I became interested in the more statistical side of the games by the time of Ruby and Sapphire's release. I learnt about Effort Values, Natures and other important (and often hidden) statistics for developing teams. I never made an entire team of perfectly trained Pokémon; I hope to do so in my Diamond version. We'll see what happens.
