:::Bulbasaur (species) is unambiguous in meaning even to those who aren't used to Bulbapedia. Bulbasaur (species) can only logically refer to one thing, while the Pokémon Bulbasaur can refer to either a particular Pokémon character or the Pokémon species Bulbasaur. --Raijinili 08:16, 22 August 2008 (UTC)

:::Sorry for digging up old conversations, but I wonder if we need "(Pokémon)" at all. We don't use "Professor Oak (person)" or "Potion (item)", even though these titles would otherwise be ambiguous. "Professor Oak" could, for instance, refer to the card. In these cases, it's clear that the character of Professor Oak is a "base" from which the cards are inspired--the title's enough for us to know what the article's talking about.
:::It's a little harder with Pokémon because there's only one "Professor Oak" and many "Butterfree". How do we know the article discusses the species and not any individual members? But I don't see how "(Pokémon)" clears that up. As Raijinili said, Ash's Butterfree is still a Pokémon. Maybe "(species)" is a bit better, since Ash's Butterfree is definitely not a species, but in the games "species" means the title in the Pokédex, like "Seed" or "Tiny Bird", so we'd be introducing more confusion.
:::I suggest removing it entirely. The plain title "Butterfree" does no worse at distinguishing the species from its members than "Butterfree (Pokémon)" and it looks much better. The only way in which it's inferior is you don't know if it's about the species or the cards. But if that distinction matters so much, we need to overhaul many other article titles: "Professor Oak (person)", "Potion (item)", or even "Misty's Starmie (Pokémon)". What an eyesore that would be. --MaskedFalcon 16:03, 16 May 2010 (UTC)
