Character

Scarlet is a professional treasure hunter in search of the treasures of ruin. She is crafty, quick-witted, and highly efficient in all matters related to her business. By taking action against clients who attempted to deceive her out of payment, Scarlet has developed an intimidating reputation. While her blunt and uncooperative manner can be off-putting to those around her, she is capable of unexpected acts of kindness toward the less fortunate. She is often referred to by the nickname Letty (Japanese: レッティ Letty). For her skills, she is given the title of "Seeker" (捜す者 Seeker).
Due to having little money to pay for expenses such as food, she has a tendency to go days without eating anything. When hungry, she is quick to accept food offered to her, not even bothering to ask if it was poisoned until after consuming it.
According to artist Satoshi Yamamoto, Scarlet's design was influenced by Wednesday Addams as she is depicted in the TV series Wednesday.[1] He would also use Jupiter from Pokémon Adventures as inspiration for her character.[2]
History
Past

Little is known about Scarlet's past, other than that she has no family to rely on. In order to make money and keep herself fed, Scarlet took on the job of a treasure hunter, searching for objects, people, or Pokémon at the request of a client. One day, a client asked Scarlet to search for the "treasures of ruin", though they neglected to tell her what to look for. Despite the vagueness of this request, Scarlet accepted the job.
One year prior to the Scarlet & Violet arc, members of Team Star found Scarlet collapsed on the ground somewhere. They rescued Scarlet and allowed her to stay at one of their bases while she recovered. Despite this, Scarlet developed no personal attachment to her saviors and had no intention of repaying her debt to the ones who saved her life. Shortly before the events of the Scarlet and Violet arc, Scarlet stopped a group of Team Star Grunts attempting to forcibly recruit a girl named Penny into their ranks.
Some time afterward, Scarlet received a call from someone going by the name "Cassiopeia". The caller attempted to recruit Scarlet as a member of Operation Starfall, a plan to disband Team Star by taking down each of their five squad bosses. Scarlet refused, but agreed to listen to Cassiopeia on the condition they find a way to allow her to freely enter and leave Uva Academy. Accepting these terms, Cassiopeia hacked into the academy's systems, falsified a background for Scarlet, and enrolled her as a student. Despite this, Scarlet still refused Cassiopeia's request.
Scarlet & Violet arc

Scarlet debuted in Speeding! Paldea's Prince of Speed!!. She was first seen participating in the opening ceremony for Uva Academy's Treasure Hunt while wearing a helmet to disguise her true identity. To Scarlet's surprise, she was selected by Director Clavell to have a demonstration battle with Nemona, the student council president. Their match was interrupted when a student named Violet barged into the courtyard and got into a race with some teachers. Later, at the library section of the entrance hall, Scarlet spoke to Cassiopeia, who congratulated her for successfully getting into Uva Academy. Nemona spotted Scarlet and tried asking for a rematch, only for her would-be opponent to flee before she could finish ascending the stairs.
In Challenge! DJ Giacomo!!, Nemona was revealed to have uncovered Scarlet's identity after gathering information from the teaching staff. Nemona tracked Scarlet to the south Mesagoza Pokémon Center, where she asked to finish their demonstration battle, only to be refused. Revealing her true profession as a treasure hunter, Scarlet explained that she had no interest in Uva Academy's "make-believe" Treasure Hunt. In Skillful! The Mysterious Treasure Hunter!!, fed up with Nemona's constant pestering, Scarlet fled and headed towards South Province (Area Two). At a nearby watchtower, she collected several Gimmighoul Coins from a wild Chest Form Gimmighoul. Cassiopeia called Scarlet to inform her that another student joined Operation Starfall and took down one of Team Star's bosses. Despite offering to help Scarlet with her treasure hunting, Scarlet bluntly turned Cassiopeia down and told them to leave her alone.
Days later, Nemona arrived at Cortondo, where she found Scarlet taking part in the Cortondo Gym's Olive Roll. Once she completed the Gym Test, Scarlet faced Katy, the Cortondo Gym Leader, in battle. Although she emerged victorious, Scarlet rejected the Gym Badge Katy offered her, stating she had no need for it. Instead, Scarlet revealed that she is looking for the treasures of ruin and requested that Katy provide her with any information she might have on them. Katy had no knowledge on the subject, but offered to let the Artazon Gym Leader Brassius know what Scarlet was searching for ahead of time. Scarlet and Nemona then left to find a watchtower located in South Province (Area Three). Just as they arrived, Nemona impatiently climbed the watchtower despite Scarlet's warnings, leading to her being attacked by a Gimmighoul. Once the Gimmighoul was defeated and its coins collected, Scarlet told Nemona to recover her vitality by resting before heading off to Artazon alone.

In Challenge! The Avant-Garde Gym Leader!!, Artazon, Scarlet was approached by Brassius after he noticed she had been staring at the "Surrendering Sunflora" sculpture for some time. Despite knowing nothing about art, Scarlet gave her own interpretation on what the "Surrendering Sunflora" was supposed to convey. Moved to tears, Brassius praised Scarlet's critique as correct. When Nemona arrived and told Brassius who Scarlet was, he agreed to provide Scarlet with the information she was looking for, but only if she completed his Gym challenge first. After passing the Gym Test, Scarlet and Brassius faced each other in a battle, which ended in the latter's defeat. Although he had little information to provide, Brassius did inform Scarlet that the treasures of ruin referred to a Pokémon. As Scarlet left, Brassius suggested she go meet with Hassel at the academy, as he was the one who gave him the information to begin with.
In PASV11, while heading back to the academy, Scarlet received a call from her client, telling her to meet them at Levincia in the evening. Once they arrived at their destination, Scarlet and Nemona decided to kill time by challenging Iono, the Levincia Gym Leader. To protect Scarlet's treasure hunter identity, Nemona had Scarlet wear a disguise and act differently during her battle with Iono. Though she emerged victorious, Nemona questioned some of Scarlet's strategic decisions during the match. Scarlet revealed it was intentional, as right before they battled, Iono requested that Scarlet help create a battle that would get lots of views. As compensation, Scarlet asked to have an all-you-can-eat buffet at every food stall in Levincia, to make up for Iono having no information on the treasures of ruin.
In PASV13, while Nemona challenged Iono, Scarlet went ahead to search for her client, eventually stumbling across Raifort, Geeta, and Rika. After determining which of the three was her client, Scarlet left with Raifort while ignoring Geeta and Rika's attempts to introduce themselves. Later, while alone with Scarlet, Raifort explained that the Ruinous Pokémon are sealed somewhere in Paldea and she wishes to capture them before they can be freed and bring harm to the world. Raifort couldn't offer a large sum of money as a reward, so Scarlet instead asked that a child whose name she didn't even know be enrolled into the academy. Raifort accepted, but noted that in order to unseal the Ruinous Pokémon, Scarlet would need the power of the Iron Serpent currently with Violet. Their meeting was interrupted by a call from Mela, asking that Scarlet come work as a bodyguard for the Grunts at Schedar Squad's Base.

In PASV14, after sneaking into the base, Scarlet had an audience with Mela, stating she had no intention of protecting what she considered trash. Scarlet criticized Mela and the rest of Team Star, noting how in the past year, they went from helping out people in need to attempting to coerce others to join their group. Furious at these accusations, Mela told Scarlet to leave her sight. As she left, Scarlet saw a disguised Violet attempting to approach the base. Scarlet talked to Violet, asking that he lend Miraidon to her. When Violet refused, Scarlet had Tarountula tie him with its webs and took Miraidon by force, promising to return it once she completed her search for the treasures of ruin. Unable to control Miraidon, Scarlet was taken to Asado Desert, where she met Arven.

In PASV15, Scarlet told Arven about her profession as a treasure hunter and that she needed Miraidon's abilities to complete a job request. Arven explained that Miraidon had lost the use of some of its abilities and needed to consume the Herba Mystica in order to regain them. Promising to return Miraidon once she achieved her goal, Scarlet agreed to help Arven obtain the Herba Mystica if he kept Miraidon under control. With information received from Cassiopeia, Scarlet and Arven traveled to East Province (Area Three) to take on the Titan Pokémon said to guard the Herba Mystica.
In PASV17, Scarlet and Arven began searching for the Titan, but only found giant holes littered around the province. While having a picnic to rest up, their food was eaten by Orthworm, the Lurking Steel Titan. They pursued the fleeing Titan with Miraidon, only to end up falling into a trap. Orthworm lured Miraidon into a pit to deep for it to climb out of, then began filling it with dirt to bury everyone alive. When Orthworm suddenly stopped, Scarlet combined Tarountula's thread and Armarouge's flames to create a makeshift hot air balloon, freeing her and the others. They found that Violet and Nemona had also arrived, then teamed up with them to send Orthworm falling down one of its pits, defeating it. While everyone enjoyed some of Arven's Herba Mystica sandwiches, Scarlet returned Miraidon, stating it was of no use to her until it regained its full strength. They were then interrupted by Cassiopeia, who requested that they raid the Navi Squad's Base quickly.
In PASV18, Cassiopeia explained that a rogue faction of Grunts planned to raid the remaining bases themselves and take over Team Star. This would allow them to change the rules about stepping down when defeated, making further raids pointless. Violet and Arven wanted to go after the Quaking Earth Titan, so Nemona chose to go with Scarlet and raid the base in their place. Scarlet initially refused, but relented after being promised one of Arven's sandwiches as a reward. Scarlet disguised herself as Violet and traveled with Nemona to Tagtree Thicket, where the Navi Squad base was located. They soon found themselves disoriented by Atticus's ninja techniques, which caused them both to pass out.

In PASV20, Scarlet and Nemona awakened inside the Navi Squad's Base, where they were greeted by Atticus in his room. Atticus admitted that while he wanted to protect the base, he wasn't willing to preemptively harm his opponents to do so. Upon realizing Scarlet was actually a girl, Atticus mistakenly assumed she was a kunoichi and became reluctant to battle a fellow ninja fanatic. Scarlet pointed out by doing this, Atticus would be giving up admitting defeat and giving up his position as boss. She goaded Atticus into fighting by mocking his ninja hobby, angering him into starting the raid. During their battle, Scarlet's vision was affected by another of Atticus's poison traps, causing her to choose the wrong Pokémon to battle with.
In PASV23, Scarlet constantly switching out her party members eventually allowed Palafin to change into its Hero Form. With its newly-gained strength, Palafin easily took out Atticus and his Starmobile, giving Scarlet the victory. Atticus cured Scarlet of the poison afflicting her, then expressed relief about no longer needing to be a squad boss. Scarlet called out Atticus's hypocrisy by pointing out that his cruel actions in their battle made him no better than the bullies that led to Team Star's formation in the first place. After they left the base, Scarlet and Nemona both received a phone call from someone asking to meet up with them. As Nemona's request from Geeta was exclusively for Champion-ranked Trainers, she was forced to split up from Scarlet, who went off to see Raifort. At West Province (Area Three), Scarlet was informed by Raifort that the academy had become aware of her infiltration. Raifort suggested she stop playing student, but Scarlet refused, noting the academy possessed a wealth of useful knowledge that couldn't be found elsewhere. Cassiopeia appeared and suggested Scarlet instead impersonate an already-existing student. As Scarlet left, Raifort demanded to know who was speaking on the phone, but Scarlet ignored the question and told Raifort to wait for her next report.
Later, Penny was called into the Director's Office by Clavell. She was questioned on the state of the academy before Clavell became Director, but was allowed to leave after she starting crying from being unable to provide an answer. Unbeknownst to Clavell, the person he was speaking to was actually Scarlet in another disguise. In Penny's room, Scarlet told the real Penny she would be going outside in her usual outfit. Raifort called to inform Scarlet that after doing some research, she determined that there are actually four Ruinous Pokémon, each sealed in a shrine in various locations around Paldea. The only way to unseal the shrines is to find and remove a series of stakes hidden around the region. Raifort suggested Scarlet go meet Ryme, the Gym Leader of Montenevera, as she had agreed to help find the whereabouts of the stakes located in the area of her Gym.
On Glaseado Mountain, Nemona called Scarlet to tell her that the Pokémon League had set its eyes on her. Fearing she could be caught, Scarlet called Penny and asked to borrow her Pokémon. She disguised herself as Penny again and continued walking up the mountain, only to be cornered by some Team Star Grunts who mistook her for the actual Penny. Scarlet was captured and taken away in a Flying Taxi, which a passing-by Nemona happened to see from afar. Nemona tried to call Scarlet's Rotom Phone, but when the Grunts saw the caller was a Champion-ranked Trainer, they panicked and immediately tossed the phone out of the car.
She was taken to North Province (Area Two) and held captive inside the Caph Squad's Base. While Scarlet feigned helplessness, her Tarountula stole a Grunt's Rotom Phone containing information on the coup they were scheming. When Carmen found Tarountula and picked up the phone, she saw the plans, forcing the rebellious Grunts to capture her as well. A pair of Grunts from the Schedar and Navi Squads happened to witness this and informed Eri about everything they saw. Once Carmen was freed, Scarlet left the room she was held in and met with the others. Wanting the best for all members of Team Star, Eri decided to allow the coup to happen and devised a plan with everyone. Scarlet agreed and borrowed a Rotom Phone from a Grunt to call Nemona.

She returned it to Violet after learning it needed more Herba Mystica to reach its full potential.
Since Miraidon only follows Violet's orders, Scarlet uses Arven's sandwiches to lead it wherever she wants.
