Release information

This card was released as one of the English SM Black Star Promos handed out to attendees of Target's Pokémon Sun and Moon launch event held on November 19, 2016. In Japan, it was released as part of the Pikachu's New Friends Collection. In the United Kingdom, this print was given away to the first 250 customers at participating GAME stores holding midnight launch events for the Sun & Moon expansion on February 3, 2017. Events were held at stores in Brentwood, Hinckley, Liverpool and Plymouth, England.

Two different SM-P Promotional cards were made available in Japan from December 9, 2016, coinciding with the release of Collection Sun and Collection Moon. The print numbered 003/SM-P was available in the Pikachu Special Set, which could be purchased at Pokémon Centers, Pokémon Stores, and some store chains, including: Circle K Sunkus, Daily Yamazaki, FamilyMart, Ministop and Lawson. The print numbered 008/SM-P was available in the Toys "R" Us Limited GX Starter Set. The Pikachu's New Friends print was reprinted in Japan as another SM-P Promotional card, available as part of the Midsummer's Pika Pika Alola Festival, which ran from July 22 to September 3, 2017. Customers at participating Pokémon Centers (including the Pokémon Center Online) and Pokémon Stores who purchased five booster packs in one transaction were given a special pack containing 1 of 6 possible promotional cards. This print features the Pokémon Center logo in the bottom right corner of the artwork.

The SM Black Star Promotional print was later reprinted as a Confetti Holo in the McDonald's Collection 2017. The General Mills Sun & Moon Mini Packs in specially-marked cereal boxes, released August 22, 2017, included a Sequin Holofoil variant of the original SM Promotional print. The SM-P prints with different artwork were later released in English as SM Black Star Promos in Shining Legends-related products, both released October 6, 2017. The 003/SM-P print (becoming SM81) was available in the Shining Legends Super-Premium Collection and Shining Legends Premium Powers Collection, while the 008/SM-P print (becoming SM76) was contained within the Shining Legends Pin Collection—Pikachu.

The 008/SM-P print was released again in Japan as another numbered SM-P Promotional card, this time Non Holofoil, as part of the Shining Ultra Beast Campaign, which began on March 2, 2018. For every five booster packs purchased in one transaction at participating stores, customers would receive a special pack containing 1 of 6 possible cards. This print has the campaign logo in the bottom right corner of the artwork.
