Plot
In the Johto region, a young boy named Hiro is excitedly seeing Pokémon in the wild. His parents call out for him as they are heading home, and Hiro runs up to them, although a little confused about the directions. Upon seeing some Skarmory flying by, some memories flash in his mind, but he can't seem to figure what they are about.
At home, Hiro is reunited with the family's Cyndaquil and Aipom, but they are left saddened seeing how he doesn't remember their old habits. He heads to his room, where multiple pictures of his childhood alongside the two small Pokémon are tacked on the wall, and opens his window, but quickly closes it in a hurry upon seeing a Murkrow wearing a necklace flying towards him. The Pokémon keeps hitting the window, much to Hiro's confusion, but dejectedly flies away. Hearing the commotion, Cyndaquil and Aipom arrive at his room, and Hiro explains to them that he forgot a lot of things during his time at the hospital. They share some time together, and Hiro remembers how to pet Cyndaquil without its back lighting up and the greeting he used to do with Aipom.
During lunch, an announcement pops up on the television about a soon-to-happen battle of a challenger that has collected the eight Johto Gym Badges against the regional Champion, making Hiro remember that his dream used to be the same. Night falls, and Hiro is gazing out the window when the Murkrow from before flies by, this time towards the forest. Piecing his recollected memories together, he runs after the Darkness Pokémon, gathering all of his resolve as he ventures into the forest at night; he, however, is not alone, as Cyndaquil and Aipom had seen him walk out of the house and followed him. With the fire on Cyndaquil's back lighting the way up, Hiro enters a small cave, which he identifies as the location featured in his recent flashes of memory. There, he finds a picture of himself when younger alongside Murkrow, both with matching necklaces.
Upon hearing a commotion, they all head outside, only to find a horde of Meowth piled on top of Murkrow. They are trying to steal Murkrow's necklace, but the Darkness Pokémon manages to keep the item within its grasp in spite of the massive numerical disadvantage. At this moment, Hiro finally remembers everything: he first met Murkrow at that very forest as they fought over a fragment of Skarmory's feather, only to be attacked by Skarmory itself and be forced to hide in a nearby cave, where they set up a Secret Base, made the matching necklaces, and discussed their dream of traveling all over Johto in order to get Gym Badges; one day, however, Hiro was rushed to the hospital, and Murkrow could only watch as the ambulance took his friend. In the present, Cyndaquil and Aipom clear the Meowth away from Murkrow with an Ember and Swift, respectively, and Hiro runs up to reunite with his friend. The Meowth return, but Murkrow manages to drag them away with a powerful Gust that drains its energy, making it fall on Hiro's arms. He ties the necklace on its neck again, and they promise to go on a journey together.
