At the Great Marsh, the Carnivine behind Lax and Chatler suddenly charges, grabbing the two Pokémon and throwing them into its mouth. Diamond and Pearl are initially horrified, but realize that Lax is fighting against Carnivine from inside its mouth. Lax manages to free itself and Chatler, to the boys’ relief. Their celebration is cut short when they realize that Platinum has disappeared underneath the mud.
Through flailing in fear, Diamond and Pearl manage to escape from the deep mud. After running to dry land, Pearl sends out Chimler to rescue Platinum. Right as Platinum is unable to continue holding her breath, Chimler swoops in to catch her and bring her to the surface.
All together once again, the three leave the Great Marsh and arrive in Pastoria City, still dressed in their overalls. Everyone is weary, and Platinum remains entirely coated in mud. Since they were unable to catch a single Grass-type Pokémon in the Safari Game, Diamond offers to lend Tru to Platinum for her Gym battle.
As they walk through Pastoria City, Platinum remarks how well-maintained everything is. A woman overhears her, and tells her that it is because Crasher Wake uses his earnings from his battles to support the city. Sensing that Platinum would like to wash the mud off of herself, Diamond and Pearl try to get her to visit an inn. To their surprise, Platinum declines. Instead, she heads straight for the Pastoria Gym.
At the Gym, Platinum makes it past the other Trainers and comes face-to-face with Crasher Wake. He sends out a Floatzel as she sends out her Empoleon. Before the battle can begin, Crasher Wake makes an adjustment to the rules that allows him and Platinum to make use of all waterways in the Gym. The battle starts, and Floatzel and Empoleon exchange blows before taking their battle into the pool. Reading their Pokédexes, Diamond and Pearl realize that both Empoleon and Floatzel are excellent swimmers. They realize that the match will come down to the fastest Pokémon.
