Red and Clefairy fight over a rice ball which landed in Diglett's Cave. They and Pikachu go inside and encounter several Diglett. Clefairy and Pikachu play whack-a-mole using the Diglett and leave. After leaving, the trio went to the Vermilion City Pokémon Center where they met up with Green. They have a chat with Professor Oak who whacks Red using a glove. After the chat, Clefairy and Pikachu go to a massage receptionist but Red takes them away before the therapy was fully done.
The trio went outside and noticed the S.S. Anne, where it was full of Water-type. Clefairy decided to go fishing and hooked a Kingler which pinched him on the nose. Kingler fled and Lt. Surge appeared. The fisherman booed Lt. Surge. Red and his Pokémon went on board where Clefairy held out a wall. Lt. Surge threw a Voltorb at Clefairy and when Voltorb touched the wall, it electrocuted Clefairy and shattered the wall. Pikachu stepped in when Clefairy yelled out for his help. Pikachu gave Voltorb tons of electricity which went all over the place.
All that electricity made Voltorb evolve into an Electrode. Despite the evolution, Clefairy was able to defeat Electrode by swatting it away but unfortunately, it crashed onto some machinery which blew up the S.S. Anne. The group and Lt. Surge wave motionlessly as Red gets angry at Clefairy for destroying the ship and the Water-type Pokémon on the ship were freed.
