Release information

This card was first released as one of the English XY Black Star Promos, available in the Hoenn Collection with artwork by Aya Kusube. It was later reprinted in the Primal Clash expansion, first being released the Japanese Tidal Storm expansion, with new artwork by the same artist. An exclusive Sheen Holofoil print of the English card was released as a preview card in the Collector Chest on November 14, 2014. This print features a copyright date of ©2014 appropriate to its release in this product, which remains on the print available in booster packs. The Black Star Promotional print was later released in Japan as one of three cards available in the Magma Gang VS Aqua Gang: Double Crisis Launch Commemoration Campaign. Starting January 30, 2015, patrons who purchased at least ¥600 worth of Pokémon Card Game merchandise at Lawson stores received Mudkip, until supplies were exhausted.

An unnumbered XY-P Promotional print of this card was made using the artwork of Daisuke Ochiai, one of the winners of the Your Favorite Pokémon category of the Pokémon Art Academy × Pokémon Card Game contest. The contest was held in Japan from December 14, 2014 to February 1, 2015 and had entrants create an illustration in Pokémon Art Academy of either a Pikachu in a costume or their favorite Pokémon. Entries had to be uploaded to Miiverse and winners received 100 copies of the card featuring their artwork.

A Confetti Holofoil version of the Primal Clash print was included in the McDonald's Collection 2015. In Japan, the Tidal Storm print was reprinted as a Mirror Reverse Holofoil in the Premium Champion Pack. The Primal Clash print was reprinted again as a Confetti Holo, as well as a Non Holo, in the McDonald's Collection 2021. This print has the Pokémon 25th Anniversary logo in the bottom right corner of the artwork.
