Plot
Wally is training on the beach with his new partner, Shiny Gardevoir. He thinks they're ready for the next competition, and now they just need a team. Having come up with a strategy that involves two Gardevoir, he decides to go find Diantha and ask her to team up with him. However, she declines, stating that he lacks something; when he figures out what that is, he's welcome to come find her again. Wally believes Diantha is talking about his strength, so he decides to go do more training with Gardevoir so he can gain Diantha's approval.
Wally fights his way through the Battle Villa, stoic and serious. Eventually, he loses to Noland. When Noland asks him why he lost and Wally blames his lack of strength, Noland says he's not getting it - what he really needs is to rest and have a bit of fun with his partner. Wally insists that he doesn't have time to rest, and he heads back to the beach where he and Gardevoir were training earlier. As he brainstorms ideas for what he can do to get stronger, he suddenly realizes that his Gardevoir has disappeared.
Wally runs around town, looking for Gardevoir, wondering if it got tired of battling with him because he was too weak. He spots Noland talking to a group of kids in the plaza and wonders why he's wasting time with that instead of preparing for the competition. He watches Noland challenge one of the kids to battle - a Youngster who has never battled before. Noland encourages him to try anyways, and he defeats the Youngster soundly. However, the Youngster says he had a lot of fun even though he lost, and he didn't realize Pokémon battles could be this fun. Wally thinks about how happy the kid looks even though he lost, and he remembers that he used to be like that, too. But now he's so focused on winning or losing that he just isn't enjoying battles anymore. He can't even remember the last time he had fun with Gardevoir, and he resolves to apologize to it for how horribly he treated it.
In the forest, Diantha stumbles upon Wally, who is looking for his Gardevoir. He explains that Gardevoir disappeared because he wasn't being considerate of Gardevoir, and Diantha agrees that that's the flaw she saw with him the other day. She asks him what he's going to do now, and he says he's not going to participate in the competition - he needs to apologize to Gardevoir and do what Gardevoir wants to do, so he can build a better friendship with it. Diantha says he should join the competition in that case, since Gardevoir is clearly eager to battle. Wally turns around and realizes that Gardevoir has returned, and he quickly runs up to it and apologizes for how he treated it. Gardevoir forgives him, and Wally once again asks Diantha to join his team. To his shock, she declines again because she wants to battle against him and Gardevoir rather than with them.
When the competition arrives, Wally's team - consisting of him, Noland, and Thorton makes it to the finals. Diantha's team - consisting of her, Calem, and Korrina - also makes it to the finals. The two teams exchange words before beginning the battle. Immediately, Wally, Noland, and Thorton's Pokémon surround Korrina's Lucario and take it out. Diantha and Calem are impressed by their strategy, but they keep fighting. Eventually, everyone's Pokémon are knocked out besides the two Gardevoir. Diantha and Wally both Mega Evolve their Gardevoir, but Wally's Gardevoir is ultimately victorious. After the battle, Wally thanks Diantha and Noland for helping him remember how fun battles are, and he starts to ask Diantha a question. She guesses that he wants to talk about teaming up again, so she extends the offer of joining up and forming a team. Wally agrees and says they should go to a café to strengthen their bond as a team, and they look forward to having fun together.

Wally | We’ve got to win! |
Wally | Pokémon gave me my strength and courage. That’s why I want to win—for my Pokémon’s sake! I won’t lose to you either, <player>! |

Wally | Great work, Gardevoir! I’m happy we trained well today! We’ll definitely win the next competition. All that’s left is to figure out what to do about our team. I think we should consider our strongest moves’ balance... Or...maybe teaming up with a Trainer who has the same partner Pokémon could help. Someone with the same partner Pokémon... Oh, of course! I know just the person! If we team up with them, we’re bound to win! I’ll lead the way, Gardevoir! |
Wally | Diantha! |
Diantha | Hello there, Wally. What’s the matter? |
Wally | Um... W-would you join my team? I thought up a great battle strategy we could try that uses two Gardevoir! |
Diantha | You have a Gardevoir, too? |
Wally | Yes! He’s my new partner Pokémon! |
Wally | If we work together, I’m sure we can win! |
Diantha | ... ... ... I’m sorry, but I have to decline. |
Wally | What? |
Diantha | Sorry if this comes off the wrong way... but right now, I don’t feel enough of a shine from the two of you. |
Wally | O-oh... OK... I understand. |
Diantha | You lack something. When you understand what that is, come back to me. |
Wally | OK... |
Wally | I lack something... I bet she’s talking about my strength... Let’s go, Gardevoir. I have to get stronger—strong enough to gain Diantha’s approval! |

Collector | Argh! I lost! |
Ace Trainer | What’s up with that guy and his Gardevoir?! They’re so strong! |
Wally | ... ... ... |
??? | Hey, hey! |
Noland | How’s it going? You keeping up with your studies? |
Wally | Y-yes... |
Noland | What’s wrong? You don’t look too happy. |
Wally | Erm... Could you battle me? |
Noland | Sure, of course! |
Noland | Get that knowledge of yours ready, and show me what you got! |
Wally | I admit defeat... Thank you for battling me. I guess we need stronger moves. Or maybe we should work on our speed instead... |
Noland | Hold that thought! Do you know why you lost? |
Wally | It’s because I’m not strong enough. |
Noland | You really don’t get it, do you. You’re too worked up. You don’t need more training—you need to get some rest. Come and join me! Let’s go grab some nice grub and have a bit of fun with Gardevoir— |
Wally | I don’t have time to rest! |
Noland | H-hey! |
Wally | I can’t be like this. I need to get stronger... There’s no way I can win as I am now... Hey, Gardevoir, what can I do to get stronger? |
Wally | Huh? |

Wally | Gardevoir, where did you go?! Is it because I’m weak? Do you not like battling with me anymore? |
Wally | Is that...Noland? Is he teaching them how to battle? We don’t have much time until the competition. He doesn’t have time to— |
Noland | OK then, who’s my next opponent? |
Preschooler | Me! Me! |
Camper | It’s my turn! |
Noland | No need to be so hasty. I’ll battle each and every one of ya! Hey, you there! You’re up next! |
Youngster | M-me? B-but this is my first time battling... |
Noland | Hey, hey! Get a move on! |
Youngster | O-OK! |
Noland | That’s good for your first try! You battled well! |
Youngster | Even though I lost, I still had a blast! I didn’t realize Pokémon battles could be so much fun! |
Noland | See, you get it! If you’re already thinking like that, then you’re a great sync pair! |
Youngster | Thank you! I’ll try to get stronger with my partner Pokémon! |
Wally | Although he lost the battle...he looks so happy... It’s all coming back to me... |
Wally | I was once like him... And it was so much fun. But now, all I think about is winning or losing... |
Wally | And I’m not enjoying Pokémon battles like I used to... |
Wally | ... ... ... Now that I think about it, when was the last time I had fun with Gardevoir? I should apologize... I was horrible to Gardevoir! |

Diantha | Is that...Wally? |
Wally | Whoa! I’m sorry! |
Diantha | Why are you in such a hurry? |
Wally | Diantha, have you seen my Gardevoir? |
Diantha | Did something happen? |
Wally | My Gardevoir disappeared. I think it’s because I wasn’t considerate enough... I ignored the bond we share—I only cared about winning. I’m such a terrible partner... |
Diantha | When it comes to sync pairs... both the Trainer and Pokémon need to work together, hand in hand. When I met you the other day, you weren’t seeing your Gardevoir properly. |
Wally | You’re right... That’s why Gardevoir disappeared. |
Diantha | What are you going to do about the competition? |
Wally | I won’t be joining. I need to apologize to Gardevoir... Then, I want to do what Gardevoir wants to do—and I want to do it together! Because...building a friendship with your Pokémon isn’t just about battling all the time. |
Diantha | If that’s how you feel, you should join the competition. You want to do what Gardevoir wants to do, right? Your partner seems eager to battle. |
Wally | Gardevoir! |
Wally | I’m so sorry, Gardevoir! I wasn’t thinking enough about your feelings... I-I... |
Wally | Gardevoir, will you forgive me? Thank you! |
Diantha | I’m glad you worked things out. |
Wally | Yes! We’ll join the competition, Diantha. This will be my first time joining a competition with Gardevoir, and I want to enjoy every part of it. So, please let me ask you again. Would you join our team? |
Diantha | I’m sorry, but I can’t. |
Diantha | Because if we’re on the same team... I won’t be able to battle you! |
Diantha | I feel such a strong, shining spirit coming from the two of you right now. And I want you to show that to me! |
Wally | Diantha! Understood! We’ll show you just how strong we are! We’re gonna make this competition the best one yet! And we’re gonna have fun while we do it! |

Diantha | I knew you’d win your way up the ranks. |
Wally | Yes! I can feel your strength, Diantha! It’s so thrilling! |
Noland | Ooh, interesting! Now this is a match I can look forward to! |
Thorton | Bzweeeeep! Hmm...let’s see. Looks like...50%? |
Diantha | Calem! Korrina! Let’s show them our shine! |
Calem | Of course! I’m going all out! |
Korrina | Let’s give it all we’ve got! |
Diantha | Let’s battle! |
Wally | Come on, everyone! Noland! Thorton! Let’s do this! |
Korrina | Wha—?! |
Calem | Lucario’s fast, so they used all three Pokémon to stop it in its tracks! |
Wally | Yeah! Our strategy worked! |
Diantha | They’re strong! But...we’re not done yet! |
Calem | So this is it... |
Noland | It’s all up to you, kid! The other team’s Pokémon seem tired, too! |
Wally | Yes! |
Diantha | We’ll finish this off with Mega Evolution! Let’s go, Gardevoir! |
Wally | There’s no way I’ll let it end here... Let’s do this together, Gardevoir! |
Diantha | Congratulations on the win, Wally! I’m impressed! |
Wally | Thank you for the great battle, too! |
Calem | I can’t believe you had your attack planned out from the moment we started that battle. That was a wonderful plan—and great teamwork. |
Korrina | You were able to tear right through our coordinated plan! |
Diantha | We had you on the ropes at the end, but even then, both you and Gardevoir were smiling, Wally. It shows how aligned your hearts were—and proves just how much you enjoyed the battle! |
Wally | Thanks to my team, I could battle until the end. And I was able to remember how fun battles are... All thanks to you, Diantha and Noland! |
Noland | You’re still so stiff and serious! You won the battle. You can celebrate a little more! |
Wally | And...erm... Diantha. |
Diantha | Could it be you want to talk about teaming up again? |
Diantha | Actually, my Gardevoir seems to like the both of you, so... I’d like to extend the offer this time. Let’s join up and form a team together! |
Wally | Yes, of course! First, we need to strengthen our bond as a team. Would you like to go to a café with both of our Gardevoir? |
Diantha | That’d be fantastic! I bet it’ll be fun! |
Wally | Gardevoir! Let’s continue to enjoy a lot together! |
