Machop stage (Play It!)

The first battle in the Learn menu of Pokémon Play It!, also known as the Machop stage (Basic stage 1) in the Play menu of Pokémon Play It! Version 2, is a short Trading Card Game battle between the player and Julie.

Gameplay

At the beginning, the player has a Machop as their Active Pokémon, and their opponent Julie has a Staryu as her Active Pokémon.

The cards on the player's hand depend on the game:

In the first game, there is no indication of how many Prize cards are needed to win, even though the game ends when the player knocks out a single Pokémon. In the second game only, each player has a single Prize card visible at the playing field. Additionally, in the second game only, the number of cards remaining in the deck is displayed as well.

In this stage, the three buttons to control Julie's speech (in the second game only) are deactivated. These buttons are gray in this stage (unlike some other stages, where the buttons would be red, yellow, and green) and don't do anything when clicked.

Before the game begins, Julie explains the playing field, the player's hand, and the Active Pokémon.

Julie's first turn

Julie draws a card, and then attaches a Water Energy on Staryu. The player is required to place the cursor on the Staryu card to check it. This causes a larger version of the card to appear at the right side, as well as the name of its single attack, "Slap". Julie's Staryu uses Slap, dealing 20 damage to the player's Machop (it started with 50 HP, therefore it has 30 HP left). Julie proceeds to explain to the player about the damage counters and how to knock out a Pokémon.

Player's first turn

The player draws another Fighting Energy card. Once this is done, the player's hand would be one of these:

  • 1 Grass Energy and 6 Fighting Energy cards (in the first game)
  • 7 Fighting Energy cards (in the second game)

Julie instructs the player to attach an Energy card to Machop. In the first game only, if the player tries to attach the Grass Energy to Machop, Julie will say that it doesn't help; the Grass Energy will return to the player's hand, and the player will have the chance to try again.

Once the player attaches a Fighting Energy card to Machop, Julie tells the player to attack with Low Kick. This attack deals 20 damage to Julie's Staryu (it started with 40 HP, therefore it has 20 HP left). Julie also mentions that some Pokémon have more than one attack (even though both Machop and Staryu have only one attack each).

Julie's second turn

Julie draws a card. She remarks that this card didn't help (without revealing what card it is), because she needed a Potion. Julie's Staryu uses Slap again, dealing another 20 damage on the player's Machop (leaving it with 10 HP).

Player's second turn

The player draws another Fighting Energy card (as a result, starting with the same cards in their hand as the previous turn, since one Fighting Energy card was already attached to Machop).

Machop already has one Fighting Energy attached, which is enough to use its only attack, the Low Kick. The player may simply attack without attaching any additional Energy cards. However, the player is free to attach the Grass Energy (in the first game only) or another Fighting Energy card to Machop if they want, though this won't help.

Once the player's Machop uses Low Kick, Julie's Staryu is knocked out.

  • In the first game, there is no mention of Prize cards in this stage, and the player simply wins by knocking Staryu out.
  • In the second game, once Staryu is knocked out, Julie asks the player to take a Prize card; once this is done, the player wins the game. The Prize card is revealed to be Machoke, though it won't be used in this game as the player has already won.

In both games, Julie mentions that in a "real" game, the player would need to knock out 3 Pokémon. She also remarks that this victory didn't count because it was just practice.

Quotes

Main article: Julie (Play It!)/Quotes

These are Julie's quotes in this stage.

"Hey! This is the playing field. It's where our Pokémon fight. Welcome! I'm ready for you. Let's battle! Staryu, I choose you!"
(The player's hand blinks with a sound effect for a few seconds.)
"Hey, see those cards down there at the bottom of the screen? Those are the cards in your hand."
(Machop, the player's Active Pokémon, blinks with a sound effect for a few seconds.)
"And see this card here? That's Machop, your Active Pokémon. Machop and Staryu are in the Arena. The Arena is where Pokémon fight. Remember that, OK? And any Pokémon in the Arena is called an Active Pokémon. You got that? Good! OK, onto the fighting! In the real game, there's a lot more to getting ready and we'll learn that later. For now, let's see how the Pokémon battle one another! I'll go first. First thing you do on your turn: draw a card. So that's what I'm going to do now!"
(Julie draws a card.)
"Now I'm gonna attach a Water Energy onto Staryu."
(Julie attaches a Water Energy on Staryu.)
"With one Water Energy, Staryu has enough to use its Slap attack now. Oh yeah, before you get crushed to the Slap attack, listen up! Put your cursor on top of Staryu and check it out!"
  • Repeated every 10 seconds until the player moves the cursor to Staryu:
"Go ahead, check out Staryu!"PI1
"Go ahead! Put your mouse on top of Staryu and check it out!"PI2
  • When the player moves the cursor to Staryu:
"Good! See that big card on the right? That's how you can tell what each cards says. And the attack information for Staryu is just below that. Now for the Slap attack. Staryu, go!"PI1
"Good! If you wanna learn more about Pokémon cards, go over to the main menu and click on 'Help'. But see that big card on the right? That's how you can tell what each cards says. And the attack information for Staryu is just below that. Now for the Slap attack. Staryu, go!"PI2
(Staryu uses Slap and Machop takes 20 damage.)
"Those counters on Machop indicate the damage it's taken. One counter equals 10 points. There's a bunch of counters in the box of cards you bought. Use them in the same way when you play the real game. Machop started with 50 hit points and took 20 hit points of damage, so now it has 30 points left. If a Pokémon reaches 0 hit points, it's lights out! It's knocked out, and out of the Arena it will go, into the discard pile! Alright, it's your turn. What's the first thing you do?"
(The deck keeps blinking with a sound effect until the player clicks on it.)
  • Repeated every 13 seconds until the player does as told:
"Hey, draw a card!"PI2 (she remains silent in PI1)
  • When the player draws a card by clicking on the deck:
"Right, draw a card! Alright, what's next? You need to assign some energy to Machop. Drag an Energy card from your hand to Machop."
  • Repeated every 10 seconds until the player does as told:
"Drag an Energy card from your hand to Machop."
(In PI1, there are 1 Grass Energy card and 6 Fighting Energy cards. In PI2, there are only 7 Fighting Energy cards.)
  • If the player tries to attack without any Energy card attached to Machop:
"Machop can't attack yet, because it needs some energy! From your hand, drag an Energy card onto Machop."PI1
"Your Active Pokémon can't attack now. It doesn't have enough energy attached to it."PI2
  • If the player attaches Grass Energy to Machop (this is only possible in PI1):
"Machop needs Fighting Energy. You can attach the Grass Energy, but it won't help. Try the Fighting Energy!"PI1
(The Grass Energy card returns to the player's hand.)
  • When the player attaches Fighting Energy to Machop:
"Right! Now Machop can attack. Go ahead, you can't hurt me! Click on the 'Attack' button to make Machop attack."
  • Repeated every 10 seconds until the player does as told:
"Click on the 'Attack' button to make Machop attack."
  • When the player attacks:
"Oh, 20 points done to Staryu! It has 20 left. You know, if your Pokémon had more than one attack, you'd get to choose which one to use."
"We'll see that in a next battle."PI1
"But Machop only has one attack, the Low Kick. So you will use that one all the time. Now it's my turn. Let's see, draw a card."
(Julie draws a card.)
"Don't need that! I need a Potion. Ah... I guess I'll attack. Staryu, go!"
(Staryu uses Slap and Machop takes 20 damage.)
"Look out! Machop is down to 10 hit points. Since my attack is done, my turn has ended. It's your turn now. Don't forget to draw a card."
(The deck keeps blinking with a sound effect until the player clicks on it.)
  • Repeated every 10 seconds, after the player has drawn a card by clicking on the deck:
"Hey, take your attack!"
  • When the player attacks:
"Whoa, better than I thought! You knocked out Staryu!"
(Staryu is knocked out and removed from the Arena.)
"When you knock out a Pokémon, it and all its attached energy go into the discard pile. Well, congratulations, I guess. If you knock out 3 Pokémon in a real game, you win! This was only practice, so it doesn't count against me. Hahaha! Alright, let's call it quits for now and go learn a few more things."PI1
"When you knock out a Pokémon in play, it goes into the discard pile. And then you get to draw a Prize card. Do that now. Draw a Prize card from your pile."PI2
(In PI2 only, the pile of Prize cards keeps blinking with a sound effect until the player clicks on it.)
  • When the player takes a Prize card (this is only possible in PI2):
"Well, congratulations, I guess. If you knock out 3 Pokémon in a real game, you win! This was only practice, so it doesn't count against me. Hahaha! Alright, you won the first battle. Let's go back and play at another game."PI2
"Alright, I'm still up for another game!"PI2 (only said sometimes)
"Click on the return button."PI2
(The return button keeps blinking with a sound effect until the player clicks on it.)
  • Repeated every 10 seconds until the player does as told:
"Click on 'return'."PI1 (she remains silent in PI2)
