List of moveset changes in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon

Reason: Doublecheck TM/HM compatibility and Egg Moves, any possible differences in games since Gates to Infinity

While movesets in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon are derived from the core series, they are not always exactly the same.

As a general note, in at least the older games, if a Pokémon learns multiple moves at the same level, it will attempt to learn only one of them at random. However, this only matters for Deoxys, as every other species can use the Move Relearner service.

Red Rescue Team and Blue Rescue Team

Uses Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen movesets, except for:

Excess Lv. 1 moves

Due to the way the game's engine is coded, it does not handle a Pokémon having more than 4 Lv. 1 moves very well, which leads to excess moves being pushed to Lv. 2.

Note that there are few Pokémon who had their moves bumped to a higher level despite having less than 4 Lv. 1 moves; these are mentioned in the section above.

Explorers of Time, Darkness, and Sky

General

The Pokémon covered here did not change their movesets between Time, Darkness, and Sky.

  • Move tutors do not exist. As such, Frenzy Plant, Blast Burn, Hydro Cannon, and Draco Meteor are instead all available after reaching Lv. 72 with at least 300 points of IQ.
  • As the player receives Eggs without involvement of breeding and Egg Groups, Pokémon can have a combination of Egg Moves that are impossible in the core series games. Volt Tackle is treated as a regular Egg Move.
  • Vacuum Cut and Wide Slash are special moves present via TMs, that can be taught to certain Pokémon with otherwise intentionally limited movesets, such as Ditto.
  • TMs for Double Team, Hail, Rain Dance, Rock Tomb, Sandstorm, Snatch and Sunny Day do not exist.
  • Dive exists as a TM. Apart from Mew, the only Pokémon that can use it are those that already learn the move via level-up.
  • The character Grovyle knows Dig, a TM move.
  • Charizard learns Ember only at Lv. 7, instead of 1 and 7.
  • Zubat learns Supersonic and Astonish at Lv. 9 and 10 instead of 5 and 9, respectively.
  • Cloyster learns Withdraw and Aurora Beam at Lv. 2 and 3, respectively, instead of 1.

  • Octillery learns Gunk Shot, Rock Blast, and Water Gun at Lv. 2, 3, and 4, respectively, instead of 1.
  • Mantine learns Supersonic and BubbleBeam only at Lv. 4 and 10, respectively, instead of also learning them at Lv. 1. Additionally, it now learns Psybeam and Bullet Seed at Lv. 3 and 8, respectively, instead of 1.

  • West Gastrodon is no longer compatible with the Flash HM.
  • Bronzong no longer learns Rain Dance. Additionally, it now learns Imprison only at Lv. 12, instead of 1 and 12.
  • Electivire learns Low Kick only at Lv. 10 instead of 1 and 10.

Egg Moves compatibility

In Explorers of Time, Darkness, and Sky, after hatching from an Egg, Pokémon will know randomly chosen Egg Moves, so that they always have four moves when they hatch. However, certain eligible species in core series already know four or more moves at Lv. 1, necessitating moving them to higher levels:

Excess Lv. 1 moves

This is similar to examples from Red Rescue and Blue Rescue Team; however in Explorers of Time, Darkness, and Sky, these moves are now moved to various levels other than 2.

Time/Darkness

Uses Pokémon Diamond and Pearl movesets, except for:

  • Victreebel learns Razor Leaf, Sleep Powder, Swallow, and Spit Up at Lv. 2, 3, 4, and 5, respectively, instead of all being Lv. 1 moves.
  • Noctowl learns Foresight only at Lv. 5, instead of 1 and 5.
  • Steelix learns Fire Fang, Ice Fang and Thunder Fang at Lv. 2, 3, and 6, respectively, instead of 1.

  • Regigigas learns Confuse Ray, Knock Off, Stomp, and Fire Punch at Lv. 2, 4, 5, and 6, respectively, instead of 1.

Sky

Uses Pokémon Platinum movesets, except for:

  • Victreebel learns Razor Leaf, Sleep Powder, Swallow, and Spit Up at Lv. 2, 3, 4, and 5, respectively, instead of all being Lv. 1 moves. Additionally, Leaf Blade was moved to Lv. 49, from 47.
  • Totodile's evolutionary family learns Aqua Tail and Superpower at levels it would learn those moves in Diamond and Pearl (making the former overlap with Thrash's new level).
  • Noctowl learns Foresight, Hypnosis and Peck at Lv. 5, 9, and 11, instead of 1, 5, and 9, respectively.
  • Pineco's evolutionary family learns Iron Defense at the level they would learn it in Diamond and Pearl (making it overlap with Explosion's new level).
  • Forretress learns Bug Bite only at Lv. 9, instead of 1 and 9. Additionally, it learns Toxic Spikes at Lv. 2 instead of 1.
  • Steelix learns Fire Fang, Ice Fang and Thunder Fang at Lv. 2, 3, and 6, respectively, instead of 1.
  • Scizor learns Feint at Lv. 1 instead of 61.
  • Shuckle learns Gastro Acid at the level it would learn it in Diamond and Pearl (making it overlap with the newly-added Bug Bite).
  • Munchlax learns Odor Sleuth at Lv. 6 instead of 1.
  • Skorupi learns moves at Diamond/Pearl levels, with Bug Bite being added at Lv. 37 (instead of 34).
  • Drapion learns moves at the levels it does in Time and Darkness, with Bug Bite being added at Lv. 44 (instead of 34).
  • Yanmega learns moves at Diamond/Pearl levels, with Feint being added at Lv. 38 (causing it to overlap with Slash). Additionally, it learns Bug Bite and Foresight at Lv. 2 and 4, respectively, instead of 1.

  • Regigigas learns Confuse Ray, Knock Off, Dizzy Punch, Fire Punch, and Foresight at Lv. 2, 4, 5, 6, and 7, respectively, instead of 1.
  • Giratina no longer learns AncientPower; when recruited, its fourth moveslot will be open, despite having moves from previous levels available.

Several hero and partner Pokémon start with an Egg Move learned:

  • West Gastrodon is once again compatible with the Flash HM.
  • Bronzong once again learns Rain Dance, at Lv. 3 instead of 1.

Gates to Infinity

Uses Pokémon Black 2 and White 2 movesets, except:

  • Move tutors and Egg Moves do not exist; instead, special TMs exist for Blast Burn, Hydro Cannon, Frenzy Plant, Draco Meteor, and Volt Tackle. These can be learned by each of the five starter Pokémon, as well as other Dragon-types for Draco Meteor. Meloetta learns Relic Song as a Lv. 1 move, while Keldeo is unable to learn Secret Sword.
  • The hero and partner Pokémon come with a move that their species only learns via breeding in the core series: Fake Out on Pikachu, Pursuit on Snivy, Covet on Tepig, Assurance on Oshawott and Focus Energy on Axew. Once replaced, these moves cannot be relearned.
  • Dive does not exist as an HM, despite compatible Pokémon being present; as no Pokémon in the game learn it via level-up, the move is completely unavailable.
  • Various boss Pokémon know TM moves:

Super Mystery Dungeon

Uses Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire movesets.

All starter Pokémon begin with various egg and TM moves learned (which can be relearned from Hawlucha's Slam School in the postgame for a fee), as well as level-up moves from later levels:

Some Pokémon know TM moves by default. These cannot be relearned at Hawlucha's Slam School:

Various unique tutor moves are exclusive to Hawlucha's Slam School:
