Pre-series

100 years prior to the events of the series, a Pokémon paradise known Laqua was found by the Explorers: Lucius, Rystal, and Gibeon. Wondering how such a prosperous environment could exist, they explored further in and discovered a large chunk of pink crystals known as Laquium, which were stimulating the growth of the plants around it, so much actually that it started devastating the land. Worried how the crystal could affect them, Lucius suggested that they leave Laqua.

Fascinated by the energy the Laquium possessed, Gibeon ignored Lucius's warning and used his Zygarde to begin digging the crystal out. This caused the Laquium to expand and release a pink mist around the area, forcing many wild Pokémon to go feral. Fearing the world could be destroyed, Lucius called on his Six Heroes to try and stop the Laquium. Gibeon's Zygarde attempted to help by covering the crystals with its Cells, only for them to be blown away. The expansion created a hole in the ground below Gibeon, who promptly fell inside, much to his friends' horror.

Despite this, Lucius and Rystal refused to back down. Motivated, Rystal's Terapagos absorbed some the mist and changed into its Stellar Form. Terapagos combined its power with the Six Heroes to create a barrier large enough to contain the Laquium, sealing it away. Lucius remained trapped inside and told Rystal to escape and protect their still unborn child.

A single Laquium crystal, referred to by Exceed as the "Eternal Blessing"

The Laquium was first mentioned by Gibeon in From So Far Away within his chamber while musing about his desire to reach Laqua, obtain the Laquium, and claiming that Lucius's adventure wasn't over yet.

In HZ054, it was revealed that at some point, Exceed discovered the Laquium somewhere and took it to the company building to research it, naming it "Eternal Blessing". However, nothing came of it, until eventually they gave up on it, storing it deep within the labs.

After Friede confirmed the appearance of a pink mist every time a vision of Lucius is created by Terapagos, he decided to return to Exceed, where he once worked for as a scientist, seeking for more information about Terapagos and Laqua and specially their connection to a mysterious material he knew about before leaving the company. After going into the lower labs and fighting off some Pokémon that were guarding it, Friede found out that the Laquium had been stolen, with the culprit being secretly revealed to be Spinel.

Spinel's Umbreon under the effects of the Laquium's mist

As noted by Friede, the Laquium appears to be surrounded by a pink mist similar to the one seem during the visions created by Terapagos.

In HZ057, Raifort claimed that Laqua possesses a pink shine, which confirmed to Friede that the Laquium is indeed connected to Laqua somehow.

In HZ064, Spinel interrupted Liko and Amethio's battle and as an experiment, Spinel used the mist generated by the Eternal Blessing on his Umbreon, causing it to go feral, power up, and defeat Amethio's Terastallized Ceruledge in a single hit. Angered by it, Terapagos transformed into its Terastal Form and destroyed the Laquium with its power, forcing Umbreon back into its normal state and exhausting it. After trapping Liko and Amethio inside a cave and meeting with Chalce again, Spinel came to the conclusion that Terapagos and the Laquium are polar opposites.

In HZ065, after reuniting with Roy, Dot, and Friede, Liko explained to them what Spinel did to his Umbreon using the Laquium and how Terapagos destroyed it.

In HZ071, Friede asked Briar about the Laquium substance. While she had never heard of it, it still made her excited to know more about the world.

Trivia

  • Laquium's effects on Pokémon are similar to that of the substance R from the Detective Pikachu game and movie series. Both substances can empower and strengthen Pokémon, but also force them into a pained and berserk state.
