Effect
Guard Spec. replicates the effect of the move Mist, which itself has changed through the generations.
In Pokémon Red, Green, Blue, and Yellow as well as Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal, there is a Trainer Tips sign in Celadon City that states Guard Spec. decreases damage taken by special attacks, including those of the Fire, Water, or Electric types (the Electric type is only mentioned in Japanese and Korean), whereas its implemented behavior refers to special moves instead. It is possible that its planned effect was originally distinct during the development process for these old games.

The item's descriptions in the Pokémon Gold and Silver Spaceworld '97 demo and Pokémon Stadium reinforce the claim of the aforementioned Trainer Tips sign without specifying types, with the description in the former specifying Special Defense, which could suggest similar effects to other moves such as Light Screen. Furthermore, the English localizations of the Pokémon Stadium series games use the "status attack" terminology for the description of the move Mist, which is inconsistent with the original Japanese text describing special attacks as understood at the time.

Generation I
When used on a Pokémon from the Bag during battle, it creates Mist on that Pokémon's side of the field as long as it is in battle.
The mist protects the Pokémon from opponent's status moves that lower the target's stats (such as Growl and String Shot). It has no effect on damaging moves that have additional effects to lower stats (such as Aurora Beam or Psychic).
Generation II
When used on a Pokémon from the Bag during battle, it creates Mist on that Pokémon's side of the field as long as it is in battle (although it can be passed by Baton Pass).
The mist makes the Pokémon immune to the stat-lowering effects of other Pokémon's moves (both damaging and status moves). It does not prevent the user from decreasing its own stats with its own moves (such as a non-Ghost-type Pokémon using Curse).
Generation III onward
When used on a Pokémon from the Bag during battle, it creates Mist on that Pokémon's side of the field for 5 turns (even if the original Pokémon leaves the field). It also increases the Pokémon's friendship a little.
The mist makes the Pokémon immune to the stat-lowering effects of other Pokémon's moves and Abilities. It does not prevent the user from decreasing its own stats with its own moves (such as a non-Ghost-type Pokémon using Curse).
Wonder Launcher
The Guard Spec. appears as a Wonder Launcher item. It costs 3 points to use.
