Appearance

Grisham is a tall man with red eyebrows, sideburns, and hair streaked with white. This hair is pulled into a small, wavy ponytail at the back of his head. He normally keeps his eyes closed in a disarming mien, but whenever they are open, his irises are small and a piercing shade of auburn, giving him an intimidating gaze. Grisham and his comrade Griselle are the owners of and baristas for Nouveau Café, and thus wear the almost the same uniform: white glasses, collared white-and-gray shirts decorated with upside-down triangles and rolled-back sleeves, black bowties, red-orange aprons dotted with those same triangles and emblazoned with the Team Flare Nouveau logo, and black shoes. While Griselle wears white tights, however, Grisham has gray wide-leg pants instead. Both of them sport gray rings fitted with Key Stones on their left middle finger, seemingly in imitation of how their former boss used to wear his own.

Personality

Under normal circumstances, Grisham is a calm, courteous, and patient person, serving customers at his café with impeccable professionalism and even remembering their favorite beverages. Whenever Griselle's hair-trigger temper causes her to lash out at others, Grisham often chides her gently to maintain the café's comforting atmosphere. However, his childhood spent in Team Flare, the organization's collapse, and the resultant branding of its remnants as criminals and outcasts has caused Grisham to secretly hold a great deal of resentment in his heart. He believes that Lysandre was a noble man led astray by his decision to unleash the ultimate weapon, and holds AZ responsible for Team Flare's downfall by having created it in the first place.

Despite this, Grisham has committed himself to serving Lumiose City's downtrodden alongside Griselle, gradually gathering goodwill and intel while anonymously competing in the Z-A Royale all towards the goal of saving the city from Ange and restoring the honor of Team Flare. Grisham is described by Mable as being "pretty strong when it comes to Pokémon battles", and true to her word, he is a Rank B Trainer whose strength surpasses all other opponents the player has fought thus far. Grisham owns a Charizard that helps him run Nouveau Café and is capable of Mega Evolving into Mega Charizard X. Upon his defeat at the player's hands, Grisham is able to free himself from the shackles of his past and vows his support to the player towards saving Lumiose City--and makes good on that promise with Griselle during the crisis.

Trivia

  • Pangoro is the only Pokémon Grisham uses that is not capable of Mega Evolving.
  • Grisham has many things in common with Alain from Pokémon the Series: XY. Both are former members of Team Flare whose partner Pokémon is Mega Charizard X. They also both own a Malamar, a Tyranitar, and a pseudo-legendary Pokémon from the Hoenn region.
  • Grisham is the first Pokémon Trainer, and one of only two Trainers (the other being Urbain/Taunie), to use a full team of six Pokémon during the main story of Pokémon Legends: Z-A.
  • Grisham is the only Z-A Royale promotion match opponent whose designated Mega Evolution Pokémon was introduced prior to Pokémon Legends: Z-A.
  • Grisham and Griselle's Pyroar are both respectively the only members of their teams to be of the opposite gender.
  • While Grisham is not stated to specialize in any specific type, five of his six Pokémon are either Dark-types or Fire-types (including his partnered Mega Charizard X), which are the most common types used in Team Flare Nouveau.
  • Grisham's Pokémon team is possibly a representation of his journey and growth as a character.
    • His usage of Dark-types likely represents his silent resentment and history as an outcast due to being a former Team Flare member, and Dark-types were commonly used among many Team Flare members.
    • His usage of Fire-types likely represents his former association with Team Flare, and his burning passion during Pokémon battles, supported by the fact that similarly to Griselle, he tends to exclaim words relating to fire during Pokémon battles.
    • Salamence's Pokédex entries from several core series games state how it's uncontrollable if enraged, but it's mostly happy due to its wings growing in from evolution, granting its wish to fly, prompting it to spout flames. This is comparable to several moments where Grisham expressed his desire to be free of his past with the former Team Flare, and it eventually became true with the player's help during the main story. As a result, Grisham is notably more positive and smiles during some of his post-game and Mega Dimension battle dialogue.
