Dynamax (GO)

Dynamax is a temporary transformation that Pokémon can undergo. Dynamax was introduced to Pokémon GO on September 4, 2024. Like in the core series, Dynamax grants Pokémon tremendous strength and size and allows them to use powerful moves called Max Moves. Unlike the core series, only Pokémon caught while Dynamaxed are capable of Dynamaxing; in the Pokémon Box, these Pokémon have an icon at the top-right of their image.

Dynamax Pokémon appear at Power Spots, volatile concentrations of Max Particles that change position over time. Players can receive Max Particles by interacting with Power Spots, simply walking, or using Max Particle Packs. Like Raid Passes, Gyms, and Raid Battles, players can spend Max Particles at Power Spots to participate in Max Battles challenging a boss Dynamax Pokémon. Max Particles are only consumed if players are victorious, at which point they can catch the boss Pokémon and station their own Dynamax Pokémon at the Power Spot to assist other players and earn Candy. If there are Gigantamax Pokémon placed at Power Spots, Dynamax Pokémon might appear around the Power Spot.

Pokémon capable of Dynamaxing can be used in all battles in the game, but they can only Dynamax during Max Battles. Dynamax Pokémon capable of Mega Evolution or Primal Reversion can only Dynamax as long as they are not currently Mega Evolved or Primal Reverted. Initially, Dynamax Pokémon only have an attacking Max Move based on the Pokémon's Fast Attack, but they can also learn Max Spirit and Max Guard. All three moves can also be upgraded twice. Unlocking or upgrading Max Moves costs Max Particles and Candy or Candy XL, depending on the Max Move's level and the Pokémon species.

In the Pokémon Box, Dynamax Pokémon have a GO Dynamax icon.png icon at the top right of their image.

Bugs and errors

  • If the player Dynamaxed a Pokémon in the Pokémon Box, swiped to another Pokémon, swiped back to the Dynamax Pokémon, and swiped one more time to the other Pokémon, the other Pokémon may have been temporarily visually affected:
    • If the Pokémon's species had Dynamax information and the Pokémon was not Mega Evolved or Primal Reverted, it would appear Dynamaxed, whether or not it could actually Dynamax. This also applied to Event Pokémon.[1]
    • If the Pokémon's species did not have Dynamax information, or if the Pokémon was Mega Evolved or Primal Reverted, it would appear XXL.
    • This appears to have been fixed.
  • Players could not release their last Dynamax Pokémon, but they could transfer it to Pokémon HOME. Doing so would lock the player out of spending Max Particles and participating in Max Battles until they received another Dynamax Pokémon.[2] This was later fixed; players can no longer transfer their last Dynamax Pokémon to HOME.[3]
  • On October 1, 2024, players were unable to encounter Dynamax Falinks after defeating it in Max Battles. Niantic distributed a Timed Research with Max Particle Sprite.png400 and a Dynamax Falinks encounter to affected players.[4]
