Captain Pikachu (Japanese: キャプテンピカチュウ Captain Pikachu), simply referred to as Cap (Japanese: キャップ Cap), is Friede's partner Pokémon and his second known Pokémon. He sits in the chair on the bridge of the Brave Olivine, the Rising Volt Tacklers' ship, and is responsible for navigating it when Friede is not present. He is also co-leader of the Pokémon who belong to Friede's teammates and the group that live on the Brave Olivine. Captain Pikachu is almost always seen outside his Poké Ball. He is a founding member of the Rising Volt Tacklers, which is named after his signature move.

History
Pre-series
As revealed in Flying Pikachu, Rising Higher and Higher!, Captain Pikachu was living in the Paldea region, but dreamt of flying and kept trying to do so using his Volt Tackle. One day, Pikachu met Friede, who offered his friendship, but Pikachu didn't accept it. However, Pikachu changed his mind when Friede offered food and help in making his dream come true. After being able to fly successfully, Captain Pikachu accepted Friede's request to be his partner and was caught. Captain Pikachu's dream of flying using Volt Tackle inspired Friede to approach Ludlow and Orla about constructing the Brave Olivine and forming the Rising Volt Tacklers to fly around and explore the world, with Captain Pikachu being one of its founding members. Later, Captain Pikachu would meet Murdock, Wy-Yes, and Mollie as they joined the Rising Volt Tacklers. Sometime after Wy-Yes left to become a journalist, Captain Pikachu met Murdock's niece, Dot, as she joined the team.
Pokémon Horizons: The Series

With Friede
In The Pendant That Starts It All (Part Two), Friede used Captain Pikachu to battle against Amethio after he and his group had boarded the Brave Olivine to coerce Liko to come with them. He battled against Ceruledge, but the battle was ultimately halted by Liko, who felt responsible for all the trouble happening around her. In the next episode, he once went up against Amethio's Ceruledge. This time, however, it was merely a distraction so that Liko could sneak around the Explorers' hideout for the moment and find her Sprigatito, who had been taken hostage by the group. Once they reunited, the battle ended with Friede and Captain Pikachu making their escape.
In Special Training with Cap!, Captain Pikachu partook in a training battle against Roy and Liko, going up against Fuecoco and Sprigatito. By using Double Team, Captain Pikachu avoided getting hit as his opponents attacked his duplicates, tiring themselves out in the process until they became unable to battle.
In Quaxly, We Can Do It, Captain Pikachu battled against a Trainer's Bisharp aboard a ferry. He and Friede were looking for Spinel and Liko's pendant when this Trainer recognized and challenged them. Despite this, the two Rising Volt Tacklers did not take long to figure out that this Trainer and the one they were looking for were not one in the same, and Captain Pikachu finished off his opponent quickly.
In Charge! Galar Mine!, Captain Pikachu participated in a battle against the Explorers. However, when a Galarian Moltres that had an Ancient Poké Ball appeared, Captain Pikachu battled it, but got injured. Fortunately, Captain Pikachu was rescued by Liko and Roy and left the Galar Mine in order for him to recover, while his Trainer and Charizard stayed behind to battle the Explorers. In the next episode, Captain Pikachu meet up with Friede at the Motostoke Pokémon Center, after recovering from his battle with Moltres. Captain Pikachu then battled Moltres again in order to calm it down, which they were able to do and the Legendary Pokémon return it to its Ancient Poké Ball.

In Reunion at the Ancient Castle!, Captain Pikachu stayed behind to guard the Brave Olivine while his Trainer, Liko, and Roy went to an ancient castle in Hammerlocke. In the following episode, he and the rest of the group arrived at the castle after Friede called upon them. Cap briefly battled Sidian's Garganacl and set off Coral's fury, which resulted in her commanding her Glalie to use Self-Destruct. He and his Trainer managed to barely escape the explosion and reunited with the rest of the Rising Volt Tacklers.
In Slip and Crash! A Mystery Pokémon?!, Captain Pikachu noticed an odd Pokémon, as he saw a strange purple liquid on the battlefield during his training with Roy's Fuecoco and Liko's Sprigatito. Later, Captain Pikachu found the Pokémon and discovered it to be a wild Polteageist. Hearing that Polteageist wanted to battle Shuckle, Captain Pikachu let them and invited some of the other Pokémon, including Murdock's Rockruff and Terapagos, to watch. However, the battle was called off, but Captain Pikachu and his friends welcomed Polteageist to the group, as they were joined by Fuecoco, Sprigatito, and Dot's Quaxly in the celebration.
In The Plan to Capture Rayquaza, Captain Pikachu fought against Spinel's Umbreon after getting trapped in a tower with him. By allowing Umbreon to send Cap crashing into a wall and then hitting the wall with Volt Tackle, Cap was able to create an opening that allowed Friede to escape.
In Roy is Crocalor, and Crocalor is Roy!, Captain Pikachu was used in a battle against Carmine's Sinistcha, winning the battle without much difficulty.
In The Search for Kleavor!, Captain Pikachu was used alongside Charizard to fend off a pack of Houndoom and Houndour impeding the group's search for Lucius's Kleavor.

In Entei's Fierce Battle Cry!, Captain Pikachu teamed up with Floragato, Crocalor, and Quaxwell in order to battle an Entei the Rising Volt Tacklers believed to be one of the Six Heroes. Using his speed and agility, Captain Pikachu kept the other Pokémon protected from Entei's powerful attacks. Although everyone managed to prove their strength to Entei, neither Pagogo nor the other Heroes resonated with it, confirming that Entei was not the one that belonged to Lucius.
In The Pillar of Fire, Captain Pikachu battled Lucius's Gouging Fire and was able to help the rest of the younger members' Pokémon pass its trial, eventually earning Gouging Fire's trust. In the next episode, Captain Pikachu joined the fight against Black Rayquaza, holding his own against the Legendary Pokemon and even managing to singlehandedly land a direct hit with Volt Tackle, but he was ultimately defeated by Dragon Ascent.
In The Rising Volt Tacklers vs. The Explorers!, Captain Pikachu partnered with Charizard in a Double Battle against Spinel's Umbreon and Beheeyem. After Pikachu revealed his Lightning Rod Hidden Ability, Spinel had his Beheeyem use Skill Swap to acquire it, effectively rendering Pikachu's damage-dealing moves useless; in the process, Pikachu received Telepathy. Knowing Lightning Rod would have Beheeyem teleporting in front of incoming Electric-type moves, Friede was able to create a plan: Pikachu targeted Umbreon with a Thunder Punch, luring Beheeyem into getting near, while Charizard Terastallized and unleashed a Dark-type Tera Blast in their direction, which knocked out Beheeyem and left Umbreon barely standing. Due to Telepathy's effect, Pikachu was able to dodge its ally's attack and soon finished off the remaining opponent with a Volt Tackle. However, the battle left Friede's Pokémon exhausted, and in the next episode, the two weakened Pokémon went berserk due to the Laquium's mist and attacked each other, knocking each other out and forcing Friede to recall them.
In Where the Adventure Leads, Captain Pikachu, Friede, and Charizard were caught in a heavy gust of wind as they were trying get aboard the Brave Olivine. At the last moment, Friede managed to get Cap to safety before he and Charizard were blown off the airship. Captain Pikachu and the others eventually returned to Mount Pericarp to look for Friede, only to find that Exceed had the area blocked off. With Spinel framing Laqua's destruction on the Rising Volt Tacklers, the group decided to lay low and go their separate ways. One year later, it was revealed that Cap, now wearing Friede's goggles, was being taken care of by Roy.
Traveling with Roy

As revealed in Mega Evolution - Roy, Captain Pikachu accompanied Roy to his travels to Lumiose City in the Kalos region to learn about Mega Evolution, and occasionally engaged in battle whenever Roy required him to, but mostly remained on the sidelines to allow Roy and his Pokémon to undergo their much-desired training.
In Eyes to the Skies Once Again, Part 1, Captain Pikachu battled alongside Roy and Ult's Sableye against a Slaking affected by Laquium.
In We Are the Rising Volt Tacklers!, Captain Pikachu discovered that Friede and Charizard were still alive, and soon joined the other Rising Volt Tacklers in celebrating with renewed hope.
In The Six Heroes Unleashed!, Captain Pikachu was used alongside the rest of Roy, Liko, and Ult's Pokémon to battle against five of the Six Heroes, who were under the influence of the Super Strong Spheres. Together, they stalled for time to allow Pagogo to purify the Laquium away from the heroes' bodies, but the Explorers used the Super Strong Spheres once more on them. In the next episode, despite its efforts, Captian Pikachu gets knocked out by Gouging Fire when he attempted to protect Ult from the Paradox Pokémon.
In HZ121, Captain Pikachu watched as the Rising Volt Tacklers worked together to stop Friede's spaceship from crash-landing on the ground after its parachute system failed. They failed, however, and just as the spaceship started to fall towards the ground, Captain Pikachu desperately rushed towards it with Volt Tackle in an attempt to catch it, but fell short of reaching it. Thankfully, Pagogo fired off a Terastal energy sphere towards Captain Pikachu that allowed him to Terastallize into a Flying type, which in turn allowed him to fly towards Friede and catch the spaceship with his hands. With Roy's help, Captain Pikachu redirected the spaceship right into the Brave Olivine's invisible barrier. After Friede reunited with his friends, Captain Pikachu ran towards him with Volt Tackle, smashing him against the invisible barrier. With tears in his eyes, Cap reunited with his Trainer after over a year. When Friede revealed that he needed to return to Hoenn to finish his prior business, he left Captain Pikachu under Roy's care again.
In HZ124, Captain Pikachu teamed up with Roy's Lucario and Ult's Sableye to help Roy, Ult, Amethio, and the girls mission to save the reamning Six Heroes from the Explorers, as they battle the grunts. Despite the three defeating the grunts, Captain Pikachu came in no shape to continue the mission, as he watched their efforts, even into the next episode.
Personality and characteristics

Captain Pikachu is often seen with Friede and shares a close bond with him. However, the two can disagree at times, which has led them to clash and butt heads with each other. Despite this, Captain Pikachu and Friede trust each other enough to know their intentions, as they would devise a plan, even though they would sometimes ad lib the plan. His closeness with Friede is shown again in HZ121, when he used Volt Tackle on him and sent him crashing into the Brave Olivine's barrier, and almost cried with tears in his eyes seeing his trainer as Friede apologized to Cap for leaving him all alone, a complete contrast to his usual composed and mature demeanor. In addition to Friede, Captain Pikachu seems to be great friends with Charizard, as he enjoys hanging out with it and would usually train with it whenever they could. Ever since he had been placed in Roy's care, the Electric Mouse Pokémon has become close to him as well. Like Friede, Captain Pikachu is especially fond of Liko and Roy, often praising them and their Pokémon when they achieve a certain goal.

Captain Pikachu is shown to be diligent and responsible, as he seems to take his position of captain seriously, being easily distinguished from the rest of his species for wearing a captain's beret outside of battles. Captain Pikachu is also intelligent and powerful, and has been shown to battle on equal terms with Amethio's Ceruledge several times. In Quaxly, We Can Do It, his intelligence was at full display, as Captain Pikachu managed to figure out from the battle style alone that his opponent was not the one he and Friede were looking for. Pikachu has also been shown to be independent, capable of battling competently without the need of a Trainer's commands. In his time with Roy, Pikachu had no problem listening to his temporary caretaker's commands, and proved to be reliable backup to Roy's Pokémon when fighting strong wild Pokémon, such as ones afflicted by Laquium. Compared to other Pikachu like Ash's Pikachu in Pokémon the Series, Captain Pikachu prefers using physical Electric moves like Volt Tackle and fighting at close range. When cooperating with others, Pikachu is shown to be selfless and willing to shield his partners from harm, as shown in Entei's Fierce Battle Cry! when he took a direct hit from a wild Entei's Sacred Fire to protect Roy's Crocalor. In the same battle, Captain Pikachu was shown to have above-average stamina for his species, being able to withstand a burn from Sacred Fire and keep fighting.
As co-leader of both the Pokémon that belong to Friede's teammates and the group that live on the Brave Olivine, Captain Pikachu usually keeps things in order with both groups. Captain Pikachu has been shown to be friendly with both people and Pokémon, and he is welcoming to new members, as shown in Slip and Crash! A Mystery Pokémon?!, when he, along with the Pokémon living on the Brave Olivine and some of his Trainer's teammates' Pokémon, welcomed a wild Polteageist to the group. In addition, Captain Pikachu is protective of the airship, as seen in Found You, Fuecoco!, when he attacked Roy after he caught him sneaking around it. With Friede absent, Captain Pikachu has served as a more mature voice of reason among the group, sometimes helping to calm tempers in an argument.
Captain Pikachu is characterized by usually wearing a sassy expression on his face, and has a habit of standing on his tail, especially when he is sitting on the chair at the captain's deck. As revealed in The Wild Pair, Friede and Cap!, Captain Pikachu has a kind of "allergy" when he is called "cute" or when this characteristic is noticed, he starts sneezing and ends up losing focus on what he was doing. Despite his usual serious demeanor, Captain Pikachu does enjoys having fun and doing various activities with his friends, such as surfing with Murdock in Riding the Waves.
Captain Pikachu also displayed great physical strength when he was able to lift Friede's spaceship with his new Tera Flying typing and managed to land it within the Brave Olivine's Force Field on the Battlefield, showing Captain Pikachu's strength is beyond that of a normal Pikachu.

Trivia

- The logo on Captain Pikachu's hat was trademarked by Nintendo, Game Freak, and Creatures, Inc. on March 6, 2023.[10]
- When Captain Pikachu Terastallizes, his hat acts as the base that holds the Tera Jewel, with the hexagonal crystal replacing the emblem on the front of his hat.
- Captain Pikachu having Flying as his Tera Type could be a reference to the Flying Terastal Pikachu distributed in commemoration of Pokémon Scarlet and Violet's release.
