BREAKthrough is the name given to the eighth main expansion of the XY Series of the Pokémon Trading Card Game. In Japan, it was released as the Blue Shock and Red Flash dual expansions that make up the first expansion in the Pokémon Card Game XY BREAK Era. It is based on Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, featuring Generation VI Pokémon and the Genetic Pokémon Mewtwo. The English expansion was released on November 4, 2015, while the Japanese expansions were released on September 26, 2015.
BREAKthrough introduced Pokémon BREAK, a type of Pokémon. Pokémon BREAK are an additional type of Evolution. When in play, Pokémon BREAK are placed sideways over the artwork window of the existing Pokémon (of the same type of Pokémon), providing them with an HP boost and additional Abilities or attacks, while retaining the Abilities, attacks, Weaknesses, Resistances and Retreat Cost of the previous stage. There are no specific drawbacks when playing a Pokémon BREAK. Pokémon BREAK are printed horizontally. The Pokémon are featured in CGI and completely covered in gold, with sparks surrounding it, and a unique squared Holofoil pattern in the background. The illustration covers almost the entire card.
The Blue Shock and Red Flash sets are released in Japanese and Korean. The Japanese sets are available in both 1st and unlimited edition, and the Korean sets are only available in unlimited edition. The BREAKthrough set is released in English, German, French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, and Russian. Cards in the English, German, French, Italian, Spanish, and Russian sets were also available as Reverse Holos. The Portuguese version of this set lacked any Reverse Holos.
