Block (Japanese: とおせんぼう Block) is a non-damaging Normal-type move introduced in Generation III.

Effect

Generations III and IV

Block prevents the target from switching out or fleeing (including via Teleport). It bypasses accuracy checks to always hit, unless the target is in the semi-invulnerable turn of a move such as Dig or Fly. The effect only applies as long as the Pokémon that used it remains in battle.

It is blocked by Protect and Detect.

The affected Pokémon can still switch out via Baton Pass, but in that case, the Pokémon that switches in will now be affected. Affected Pokémon can also switch out with U-turn. Conversely, the Pokémon that used Block can switch out with Baton Pass and the effects of Block will still apply. Also, if the affected Pokémon is Roared at or hit with a Whirlwind, they will still be switched out.

If a wild Pokémon uses Block on the player's Pokémon, the player will be unable to escape, unless the player's Pokémon has Run Away or is holding a Smoke Ball.

Generation V

If a Pokémon traps a target with Block and then switches with Baton Pass the target will no longer be trapped. Pokémon affected by Block can switch out with Volt Switch. Also, Dragon Tail and Circle Throw will force the affected Pokémon to switch out.

Generation VI onward

Block no longer affects Ghost-type Pokémon. It will now hit the target even if it has used Protect, Detect, or Spiky Shield, but will fail if the target is protected by Crafty Shield.

Pokémon affected by Block can also switch out with Parting Shot and Flip Turn.

Block can be used as part of a Contest Spectacular combination, causing certain moves (Explosion, Memento, Perish Song, and Self-Destruct) to gain an extra three appeal points if they are used in the next turn.

If powered up by Normalium Z into Z-Block, the user's Defense stat rises by one stage.

Block inflicts the stuck (previously Leg HoldRB/Shadow HoldTDS) status condition which prevents the target from moving (but may attack), or switch places with the team leader. This status lasts for 2-5RBTDS/ 7GtISMDturns. In Super Mystery Dungeon Ghost-type Pokémon cannot become stuck.

Pokémon UNITE

In Pokémon UNITE, Block is Snorlax's second move. It is obtained by reaching level 7 upgrading Rest into it instead of Yawn. The user creates and holds a wall in a targeted direction for 4 seconds. Enemies that contact the wall are knocked back and stunned. The user cannot attack or use abilities while Blocking but can move slowly. While Blocking the user’s Defense and Sp. Defense are increased by 25%. At level 13, the user takes less damage while this move is in effect.

Description

Trivia

  • In Generation III, the status screen erroneously states that the move has 100% accuracy, even though it ignores accuracy and evasion checks.
