The Ancient Poké Ball (Japanese: いにしえのモンスターボール Ancient Monster Ball) is a 100-year-old type of Poké Ball that appears in Pokémon Horizons: The Series.

The search for these Poké Balls is an important plot within Pokémon Horizons: The Series. The only known Ancient Poké Balls belonged to the Ancient Adventurer Lucius, who used them to capture the members of the Six Heroes. In addition to capturing Pokémon, they seem to have unique powers and react to certain stimuli such as Pagogo's Terastal energy and even each other. They were also shown to be opened differently than other Poké Balls.
History
Ancient Poké Balls were used before the modern ones at least 100 years ago. The Ancient Adventurer Lucius is the only known Trainer to have owned these Poké Balls, as he used them to catch his Pokémon, the Six Heroes. After reaching the Pokémon paradise Laqua, an incident caused by Gibeon's fascination with Laquium resulted in the Six Heroes being scattered around the world with their respective Ancient Poké Balls. One of them washed up on the shoreline of an island in Kanto, where it was found by a man, who later passed it down to his grandson, Roy.
The first Ancient Poké Ball appeared in The Treasure After the Storm!, under Roy's ownership, who mentioned that he had never managed to open it. In The Ancient Poké Ball, the ball reacted with Liko's pendant and opened, revealing the Black Rayquaza, who flew away soon after. The Rising Volt Tacklers's travels led Liko and Roy to find the other five Ancient Poké Balls in different regions: two in Paldea, one in Galar, one in Kitakami, and another at sea.
In Where the Adventure Leads, after Lucius passed away, all of his Pokémon were automatically released from their Ancient Poké Balls. As the Rising Volt Tacklers fled from the havoc caused by the Six Heroes affected by Laquium, the Ancient Poké Balls, alongside Lucius's diary and belt, were lost in a fissure created as a result of their vicious battle. During Episode: Mega Evolution in Mega Evolution - Ult, Roy reveals that he actually still has the Ancient Poké Ball which housed the Black Rayquaza.

Trivia

- When a Pokémon enters or leaves an Ancient Poké Ball, the beam light is golden instead of red like in typical Poké Balls.
- Gibeon owned an unnamed Poké Ball that shares many resemblances to Lucius's Ancient Poké Balls, as they were both used to house special Pokémon (the White Zygarde and the Six Heroes, respectively), shared a more mechanical-like design, and existed around 100 years ago.
- The Hisuian Poké Balls also bear some resemblance to the Ancient Poké Balls, being outdated and mostly used in the past.
