EX Ruby & Sapphire is the name given to the first main expansion of the EX Series of the Pokémon Trading Card Game. In Japan, it was released as Expansion Pack, the first expansion in the Pokémon Card Game ADV Era. It is based on Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire, featuring Generation III Pokémon and introduces Pokémon-ex. The English expansion was released on June 18, 2003, while the Japanese expansion was released on January 31, 2003.
Starting with this set, the Japanese TCG would no longer support the e-Reader peripheral, whereas English expansions would continue to feature e-Reader compatible cards. The Dot Code strip contains Pokédex entries, a TCG glossary snippet, and a brief area summary for Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire Versions. Pokémon-ex, Trainer, and Energy do not have this feature though.
EX Ruby & Sapphire introduced an updated card design, which included numerous changes. The border on English prints remained thicker only on the bottom to retain the necessary space for Dot-Code strips. The ID is now located on the bottom of the card. The Japanese prints' card border dimensions were reverted to those used on cards before the e-Reader feature was introduced, and now feature silver border. On both prints, the Evolution box's border was changed from gold to silver and moved to the bottom of the artwork. The artwork's border was also changed from gold to silver, the illustrator was moved to the bottom right of the artwork. The copyright information is now located on the center of the bottom of the card. In the English prints, the Energy symbols for attacks are smaller and are presented linearly, as opposed to stacking them in columns.
