Zubat (Japanese: ズバット Zubat) is a dual-type Poison/Flying Pokémon.
It evolves into Golbat starting at level 22, which evolves into Crobat when leveled up with high friendship.
Biology
Physiology
Zubat is a small, blue bat-like Pokémon. It has two long, skinny legs. Zubat's face lacks any eyes and a nose. The insides of Zubat's ears and undersides of its wings are purple. Zubat's wings are supported by elongated 'fingers', and four teeth can be discerned from inside its mouth, two on the lower jaw and two on the upper.
Gender differences
A female has smaller fangs.
Special abilities
Though blind, Zubat can navigate well using echolocation. Similar to radar or sonar, echolocation is a method of locating objects. Zubat will shriek, and then based on the time and direction from which an echo returns to it, Zubat determines the structure of its surroundings. Also, by screeching at shrieky, high-pitched frequencies, Zubat is often able to disorient and confuse its foes with the treble, shrill noises it expels. It is in this manner that Zubat use attacks such as Supersonic or Confuse Ray. Zubat are so persistent and capable in this expertise that the misfortune of happening across one has become somewhat of a famed encounter through its bothersome abundance. Besides this, Zubat will occasionally attack using its teeth and/or wings. Moves like Bite and Poison Fang can be credited to Zubat’s fangs, as can attacks such as Leech Life or Giga Drain, which is in reference to Zubat’s bloodsucking nature. Also impressive, Zubat is one of few exclusive Pokémon that has the ability to use Air Cutter, an attack it would execute using its wings. Zubat is also capable of learning Brave Bird, despite its mammalian class.
Behavior
Zubat is a nocturnal Pokémon, forming colonies in perpetually dark places usually including mostly caves and old houses. During the daytime, Zubat sleep hanging upside down in dark places, avoiding sunlight at all costs. Daylight causes Zubat to become unhealthy, and prolonged exposure reportedly burns its skin slightly. Captured and trained Zubat however have been recorded as being much more tenacious in the daytime, even when directly exposed to sunbeams. At nighttime, Zubat swarms residential caves and terrorizes weary travelers with its repetitive, disorienting assaults.
Habitat
Since Zubat prefer the dark, their primary habitat is caves, although during the daytime Zubat may also stay under the eaves of old buildings or in forests. However, at night, they can be found roaming outside, usually for food. It has a very wide range which includes Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, Sinnoh, Unova and even Orre.
Diet
- Main article: Pokémon food
At night it goes in search of other Pokémon and sometimes humans to suck blood from, although the information is not documented as clearly as that of its evolution, Golbat.

Trivia
- No other Pokémon has the same type combination as the Zubat evolutionary family.
- Until Generation V, Zubat was the last Pokémon in both the English and Japanese alphabetical listings. With the release of Black and White, Zweilous became last in English and Scrafty last in Japanese.
- Zubat is capable of learning Brave Bird despite not actually being based on a bird.
- Zubat shares its species name with its evolutions, Golbat and Crobat, and with Woobat, all known as the Bat Pokémon.
- Although Zubat does not have eyes, it can still be affected by accuracy-reducing moves that would appear to require the target have eyesight to work.
- Zubat, along with Golbat, has appeared in every regional Pokédex. This is due to the Unova Pokédex's expansion in Black 2 and White 2.
Origin
Naturally, Zubat's design is inspired by bats. Its lack of eyes may come from the misconception that bats are blind. Its wings resemble sound waves, which is probably because Zubat and real-life bats use echolocation to navigate and locate prey.
Name origin
Zubat may be a pun based on both bat and ずばっと zubatto, an onomatopoeia for when an edged tool forcefully pierces something (possibly referring to its fangs or the sound a bat makes).
